What To Wear Wednesdays

Oh dear. It appears my Wednesday post has turned into Thursday...ahhhh.

Just back from the Girfriend's Getaway Cruise this week and can I just tell you that if you ever have the opportunity to go on one of these cruises you should go.

Best.Ship.Ever.

Seriously!!!! The Liberty of the Seas is the third largest ship in the fleet, (so I'm told,) and it was completely refurbished last year. We even had a balcony from our room...it was sooooo awesome.

When we landed at the Ft. Lauderdale airport to start the trip, I ran into Chonda Pierce as we were both speaking on this cruise. Check out her t-shirt.

As you can see she doesn't do perky...and wears a t-shirt to prove it!

We had the best time! Typically when I'm speaking on a cruise (this was my 4th) I am soooo tired when I get home, but this one was absolutely exhillerating! Ready to go back again.

Wow! Thank you so much for commenting last week and telling me your age and lifestyle. This helps me so much in knowing how best to write for you as I desire to bring you relevant information each week. I heard from many of you that you don't get a notice about the blog until one week after it's posted so we are checking into that, thank you for letting me know about that.

I'm heading out to speak on the Girls Getaway Cruise with Premier Christian Cruiselines. Lysa Terkeurst, Chonda Pierce, Angela Thomas and others will be some of the speakers. I wish you were coming along!

My newsletter is going out tomorrow (Thursday) and I've listed 7 of the essential items for Spring. One of the items I mention is the fitted blazer and that's what I want to talk about this week.

H&M

A blazer can be worn by any body type and that's one of the reasons I love it. It also can be worn with a classic pair of trousers or a trendy pair of jeans. Wear it over a blouse or your favorite t-shirt. Wear it with a skirt or over a dress.

This is one wardrobe basic that when purchased correctly, you will have for years.

So what is "purchased correctly"? For one, make sure it's in a color that is one of your neutrals (black, brown, camel, navy, gray or even white) OR in a POP color that helps you make an entrance!

Second, make sure it's a good fit. Get it altered if the sleeves are too long or if the shoulders hang off your shoulders. When fitted properly to your body (you may even need it taken in at the sides), then I promise this wardrobe piece will be a go-to item you'll wear again and again.

Third, if you are a b body shape, then get one that covers your belly. Don't opt for a shorter style like the pic above.

O body shapes should buy a blazer that is single breasted (not double) and one that hangs no more than 3 inches apart when not buttoned.

d body shapes can wear the shorter style, and one fitted at the waist to show off that curvy figure of yours.

X types can wear just about any style just be aware of your challenge areas.

The best length for a jacket or blazer for anyone (unless you're going for the shorter style) is that the bottom of the jacket should hit right at your finger tips or if you cup your finger tips under the bottom would fit in your hand.

Blazers are a big item for Spring so take your time looking for one and get one when you see it while the stores have the best selections.

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year my faithful fashionista friends!

Yes, it's late on Wednesday, yet still, it's Wednesday, right?

I have so much to be grateful for this past year and am excited about what 2012 will bring. Did you make a New Year's resolution? If so, I pray it will be a REVOLUTION for you.

As for me, I have opted to live life simply in 2012. When I say 'simply' I mean to live without so many goals and such, and to live each day knowing that first, I belong to God and He is in charge, and second, to not be overwhelmed with the goings-on of my life. I want to let God order each day and not over-plan and forget that HE is ultimately in charge and if I let Him take care of my day, each day, it will be so much better. I know I say that He's first, but this year, I really want to mean it and make sure each day begins and ends with Him as I ask Him to lead the day for me.

I've decided the word "BUSY" will not be in my vocabulary anymore.

I'm just not gonna say it.

I find that when I said that word, I get a little depressed and I'm just not a depressed kinda girl, ya know? So, for me, if 2012 brings nothing more than the absence of that word, then it will be a very good thing.

As you can see, I have a new Blog header, thanks to

Anna at Innovative Impulses.

We're still not all done with it but I didn't want to wait any longer so I asked her to get it up to kick off the new year. So you'll see some changes continue as I am opting for a more high style, fashion-forward look. I hope you like it...would love to hear your thoughts. Just know it's not all done yet, but a work in progress. As for me, I love it...I think it shows style; yet is warm and inviting, all of which I hope I am.

As your go-to Fashion Blogger, I pray this year I am able to bring you information that is timely and desired by you. I've been collecting your emails all year and will be writing about the most popular topics. If there is anything you'd love to hear about, please comment this week, or email me personally and let me know what it is. I will tell you that the most popular request I receive is to write blog posts for women to help with dressing age-appropriate, and for lifestyle.

So for today, I leave you with this little bit of beauty advice:

Remember that you are pretty just the way you are.

Even with the diet you are on (because so many of you are), even with the wrinkles on your face, or the extra fluff on your body,

you are pretty just as you are.

My job and desire this year is to bring you fashion and beauty blog posts that will help you grow in your attitude of seeing yourself in a more healthy way and teach you to dress for your age and lifestyle.

Wow, it's almost Christmas!!!! Jesus' birthday and we get to celebrate it..whoohoo!

I hope you've got your shopping done and are ready for some relaxing, fun time celebrating with your family.

Since the new year is upon us, soooo very soon, I thought I'd share an article I contributed to Tyra Banks' website.

Beauty Boot Camp Before and Afters!

Wow! It's December already and I missed a whole month of blogging. Gracious! I apologize for leaving you hanging and I appreciate so many of you for emailing me to check on me. It's wonderful to feel so loved! I really, really appreciate that more than you know, so thank you.

The last time I blogged, it was the week before our first ever Beauty Boot Camp Makeover Retreat. Can I just tell you how amazing that was? Seriously, of all the things I get to do, that was definetely at the top of my list. We had 35 amazing women attend from 10 different states. Our Fashion Team consisited of 4 women, PLUS an amazing photographer and a bra fitter-extraordinaire! So all in all, we had 42 women in attendance at the Springmaid Beach Resort in Myrtle Beach.

I posted a lot of pictures on the Fashion Meets Faith Facebook Page so be sure and take a look at them. You will love seeing the Before and After Hair Makeovers that were done by our fabulous Sherry Long, Hair Guru. WOW! Are they AMAZING or what?????? We had such a blast. We spent the weekend teaching the campers what their very best look is. We helped them see themselves as beautiful, no matter their size or shape. We laughed and cried and laughed some more. Some shopped till they dropped. Many got new bras! Donna taught everyone how to transform their closet when they got home! Jill led us in devo's about inner beauty. Megan took a gazillion pictures of everyone. Sara measured everyone for the proper bra. Sherry cut and styled hair. And I got to teach about all things fashion related. We even learned about makeup. If it had to do with beauty, whether inner or outer, we learned about it. It was so much fun. Here's some more pics:

MORE STUFF!

November was such a busy month for me and I thought December was going to allow for a break but God had different plans for me. For one, I completely lost my voice after Boot Camp. I had to go on bed and body rest for a week only to finish out the month with several more speaking engagements AND CIC training (where I train women to do what I do.) My voice, honestly, still isn't back completely. I squeak alot!

I also took on a new Fashion Editor position of WHOA magazine. If you're not familiar with it yet, you will be! It is going national in January as they just signed contracts with Target and Walmart and many grocery stores so you'll start to see it when you check out at these places. Make sure you pick up a copy and see me among the editors at the beginning of the mag!!!!! hahahah!!!!

I will have a 6 page Fashion Layout in the January issue (quarterly magazine), so make sure you pick up a copy or subscribe to it. It is considered among many as the

As I was writing an article this week for a magazine I write for, I was doing some research for the best mascaras. I found out what women like about the products on the market and thought I'd pass on this knowledge to you.

Mascara is one of those cosmetic items that we all seem to wear, even if we wear nothing else but a little lip gloss. So here it is, a review of Mascaras and what you might like to know about them.

#1 Rated Mascara:Lancome Definicils High Definition Mascara:This mascara is chosen more often than any other mascara for its ability to lengthen lashes with minimal clumping. Users are fiercely devoted to this brand, saying that its long, thin brush makes it easy to apply to small inner and lower lashes, and noting that this long-wearing mascara is easy to remove. #5 Maybelline Great Lash Mascara: This mascara is fondly known as America's favorite mascara for 40 years...can you believe a mascara has been around that long? It's still in the top of reviewer's lists too. It's under seven dollars it conditions as it thickens with no clumps and no globs. Sounds like something worth trying again as I'll bet every single one of us is familiar with the green and pink tube.

A MUST-READ today

Hi all! If you see all this writing and think to yourself, "oh, I'm gonna read this later, or it's just too wordy so I'm not gonna read it at all" I PROMISE you that you should READ THIS TODAY.

I'm about to share with you an email that I received from someone and it is such proof that God is at work. That God cares about each and every person and I'm so amazed and what He did for this woman. I'm not sure you know how excited I am about Beauty Boot Camp Retreat that's coming up, but honestly, I don't remember being so pumped for something in a really long time. I know, that I know, that I KNOW that God has a purpose for this camp. But I have to you, I have NEVER had a doubt as to whether or not I heard God correctly in the planning of this because every door I walked thru, just kept moving me toward holding this camp. I am confused, though, because I thought we'd have 100 women attend (as I've never offered anything like this for this low price before) but obviously God has other plans because there are only 24 women signed up. But you see, it's never about the numbers, it's ALWAYS about the individuals. If you want proof of that, read this email I received and get ready to believe God BIG for your own life.

Dear Shari,

I just HAD to share a "God thing" with you this morning. I hope it will confirm for you in a small way that God is definitely at work regarding your bootcamp. First of all, my good friend Edie and I each have 1 child. They graduated together and are attending different universities. We both have put our children first and have let our weight get way out of control. We decided that it is our time in life to do for us.

Within the last 2 months, she has lost over 30 pounds to date and I have lost 20! My goal was to lose 25 by your bootcamp, but I am going for more! It has felt wonderful to have to give away my pants because they are now way too large. LOL! Neither of us really wears nice clothing nor do we wear makeup. I am SOOOO looking forward to learning how. Your gift from God will truly bless us.

Finally, I wanted to share my "God thing". I lost my full time job (after years) back in August. I am now working 2 part time jobs (waiting tables and at Lifeway) while attending school full time. As a single mom for 15 years I have always been very strapped and have never in my life had a vacation. I'm not exagerating.... never. So when your bootcamp became available I shared it with my friend and dreamed of a way to be able to go.

My first thought was that I have never spent $289 on myself in my entire life. After just losing my job, there is no way I can justify it. But..... I truly believe God has placed this on my heart. I prayed about it and came up with an idea/plan. I asked my manager at the restaraunt to hold on to my timecards which pay me $2 an hour. I figure I will budget my tips but maybe I won't miss the $2 if I never see it. She agreed and after working several weeks, I asked on Saturday if she would be willing to add my time cards. I figured if there was enough money, I would commit to your bootcamp. I left it in God's hands.

Shari, I can't express enough how truthful I am being....... Please know that she had NO idea how much I needed. She added it up and looked and me almost sheepishly and said "you only have $289". NOT $250, NOT $295, but EXACTLY to the penny what I needed! Isn't God wonderful!

I have no doubt He orchestrated that to let me know He was in control the whole time! When I explained to my manager why I was so flabbergasted, she became excited. I shared with her, as an unbeliever, about your Christ centered bootcamp and she is now looking into attending herself. How cool is that!

Just wanted to share and hopefully encourage you in some small way. Lastly, because I had to register so late, I missed the opportunity to have my hair cut there. We both would really like this done. We are driving in and will arrive about 11am on Friday. Do you personally know someone in the Myrtle Beach ara that we could make appointments with that afternoon before the bootcamp starts? Someone with will take our face shapes into consideration?

Pure Natural Clothing Style

Have you ever felt uncomfortable because others around you seem to be all fashionista-like and you just don't feel comfortable all dolled up like that?

Meet Trish Allred:

I met Trish a few weeks ago at my Wednesday morning book study. Adorable, precious, caring, and so very pretty, Trish comes each week in clothes that truly reflect the beautiful woman she is. I asked her if I could snap a picture of her because I love when someone knows what they like in clothes and understand their style (even if they can't put a name to it).

On this early Fall day, Trish is wearing a cotton plaid blouse, Miss Me Jeans (with great back pockets with flaps), a wide leather belt and suede clogs. Her natural blonde hair is caught up in a clip and her look is pulled together.

Pure Natural doesn't mean 'thrown together'. It means putting thought into your clothes and wearing pieces that reflect your natural loving self, just like Trish.

Trish also inspired me to buy a stop watch. I'm hoping to be inspired to use it too. LOL.

Trish recently dropped 25 pounds in about 2 months by doing the following:

She marked out a 2 mile stretch of road and with a stop watch, she ran for 60 seconds, then slowed wayyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy down and walked very slowlyyyyyyyyyyyyyy for 60 seconds (using her stop watch for timing). She did this (and still does) for 7 days a week and in the first month lost 15 pounds and then another 10 the next month or so.

She did say she cut out breads and cheeses, too.

I told her today that I got the stop watch the day after she told me about her success and it's a very pretty addition to my kitchen counter. I'm hoping to use it soon with tennies on as I run/walk for 2 miles each day. I was very encouraged when she told me today that she had her stop watch for 3 weeks before she actually got up the courage to run so I'm feeling much better now! LOL.

Top 10 Ideas to Update Your Look for Fall

October has arrived and I love it! With it comes the cool weather and fashion you can step out in so I've created a TOP TEN List of things you can do to make certain you look trendy and in season.

Here you go:

1. Choose 2 neutrals to build around. Here's what I'd recommend for each DCC:

Soft: Camel and Ivory
Clear: Black and White
Deep: Black and Charcoal
Light: Ivory and Charcoal
Warm: Chocolate and Camel
Cool: Black and Gray

2. Choose 1 pop color to use for add on color in accessories, scarves, gloves, shoes, sweaters, bags, skinny jeans, blouses, whatever! Choose a color that blends nicely with the neutrals you've chosen.

3. Add texture with a chunky sweater, textured tights, wool pants, cape or poncho. Purchase these in your neutrals or your pop color. Perhaps the wool pants in your neutral and the chunky sweater in your pop? Sounds delicious.

4. Find something sparkly like a sequin tank or top with glittery embellishments like the one here from the new Jennifer Lopez collection at Kohl's. It will carry you right through the holiday season. Wear it with a flowy skirt for a holidy luncheon, a pair of fabulous jeans and boots for date night with your hubby or velvet skinny jeans, satin blazer and heels for New Year's Eve.

5. Have fun with fur trim. Whether you wear boots or socks adorned with the furry stuff or wear a faux fur vest, you gotta get some fur this season. I especially like the longer ones like the one I'm showing here because it flatters most body types. You can get this one at HM for $19.95. It might just be the deal of the season!

Wear it with or without the belt.

Speaking of HM, never before have you been able to get their things online so this is new for them. I'm glad, cause they have always had very affordable, stylish apparel.

6. Makeup your eyes with metallic eyeshadow. Go for bronze, silver, copper or gold eyeshadow and show off those gorgeous eyes. Chanel has a stunning new collection but be ready to pay the big bucks to get one, yes, I said one, it's $36. Or duplicate the look from Avon, Target, Walmart, for a lot less.

7. Riding boots are a must. Riding boots are the theme this season and make any outfit look complete and on trend. Choose one of your neutrals...or match your hair. These are from Dillards. My very favorite place to get footwear. They have extended sizes, too.

8. Have you had a compliment on your hair lately? If not, do something different with it. Or make an appointment.

9. Get a manicure and pedicure with a metallic color that coordinates with the neutrals you choose to wear for your wardrobe.

10. Look in the mirror and thank God for making you so fabulous and unique. Only YOU can do YOU like YOU can.

What I Wore!

Hello you beautiful fabulous women!

I'm a little excited about today's post because, though I love to see what people wear, I've had to train myself to not analyze everything someone has on...ya know what I mean?

Just this week, I had a new friend from my book study (not my book, but another friend's book, which you should run to buy, (not walk) because it is truly one of those lifechanging books that brought me freedom in a way I didn't know I needed free from) but oh, I digress, anyway, my new friend started explaining away her outfit and how it just wasn't good enough, and that she didn't know how to put things together, and on and on about how she didn't know how to dress and that I was likely judging her until I yelled STOP!

Honestly, unless a woman's boobs are falling out of her top or her dress is uber short I have trained myself not to judge another's clothes unless asked. You see, with the kind of biz I'm in, clothes are the thing for me. Fashion, beauty, appearance, all that, it's what I do, it's how I make my living.

Before I became a Christian, I was pretty direct. I had somthing to say about most every outfit I saw. I was probably still nice about it, but nice in a not-so-nice way with a smile....yikes.

I had to jump in and offer my comments...how fun is that?

But then it turns out there's a whole community of gals who link up and show each other what they wear....now that's a dream come true for someone like me! I can look at their clothes and tell them what I think because they're asking, right???? Oh my goodness how fun!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

COLORBLOCKING!

If you've been to the mall or browsed thru any fashion magazine you've probably noticed a trend called

Colorblocking.

Graphic, bold, vibrant colors being worn in "sections" on your body in the form of wardrobe pieces make up this trend. By wearing one piece (say, your skirt) in one color (say, red) and then choosing a top that's purple. That's colorblocking.

It might be wearing a beige pair of pants and a black sweater and a red blazer. Get the picture? If not, take a look at these pics:

It throws 'column dressing' a little off kilter so remember that in case you're a little bit fluffy.

In the case of the not-so-perfect body (okay, so for most of us!) then try colorblocking in shoes,boots or a purse like these:

So there you have it! It's a terrific way to have that high fashion look, and wearing even just one of these items will make any outfit look Fall 2011 updated!

Sleepwear!

Hey fashionistas!

Have you ever considered that your pajamas and sleepwear should be attractive too?

If you're a married woman, I'll bet in the early days of your marriage you considered looking mighty pretty for that man of yours...and now...not so much!

We get tired of fixing up, right? It's much easier to throw on your gray or navy sweats to wear around the house at night and early morning. But have you ever stopped to think that your sleepwear is a part of your wardrobe that should be in colors that flatter you and styles that do, too?

Yes, it's nice to look good for your man, but how about looking nice for you too...even in sleepwear!

One of my facebook friends, Jolee Bishop Beamer asked specifically about this topic. Here's what she asked (and a picture of her too!)

What do you suggest for sleepwear? Something that my husband will find attractive but that I can still wear around the kids or in the event I have to run outside in an emergency. I'm sure there's a fine line between Fredrick's and my college wear!

Yes, Jolee and bloggy friends, there is a fine line but there are some great ways to be comfortable, yet look like you're ready for bed, too!

First, some sleepwear you should NOT wear: and why not? because you'll look like a granny when you're not...and if you ARE a granny, you'll look like your granny's granny.....do you all get what I'm trying to say here? They will make you look way older than you are! Take a look.....again, of what NOT to wear:

Now you know what NOT to wear, let's take a look at

WHAT TO WEAR.

Keep in mind that as you shop for sleepwear, have your color swatches with you. Color is THE most important aspect of sleepwear. Purchase sleepwear in a color that is VERY flattering to you. Don't sway very far from the color that is shown on your swatch. As you look at these PJ's, think of the color first, the style second. The sleepwear I've shown are all from Dillards and range from about $30-70. I have found that sleepwear from a Department Store tends to be better quality and doesn't shrink when I wash it, though,

this might not be so for all pieces so read labels.

The other important aspect of your sleepwear is the fit...don't wear something too short (if you have kids you may be bending over alot) and always follow the guidelines I've taught you for covering the fullest part of your body. If you have a tummy, then find something that has a top that is longer than the fullest part of your belly. For those of you with fuller bottoms, a night shirt or pj's with more relaxed pant bottoms are wonderful. I love the hoodie type pj's but really, any of the pics below work whether you're in the house with hubby and kids or if you have to run outside in a jiffy.

And if you want to be comfortable AND get your husband's attention, you can always wear sleepwear with his favorite team's logo...and then get ready to go to bed...early!

White After Labor Day?

Should you or should you not, wear WHITE after Labor Day?

Whether it's by text to my phone, emailed to my inbox, or asked when someone spots me at the mall, this is the most asked question of the month of September for me so I thought I'd address it here.

A few years ago, Time published an article about wearing white past Labor Day, giving possible reasons why this urban legend of a rule was created. The main reason for the white rule seemed to come from early 20th century American, when many well-to-do city dwellers would "summer" in homes outside of their metropolis abodes, dressing in light, white fabrics to stay cool. According to Time, Labor Day is noted as the end of summer, and many of these people, upon their return back to the city, would pack away all traces of white considered "resort wear." This trend translated into the early 1950's middle class population, and most likely to prior people, who concocted the Memorial to Labor Day only for white rule to emulate the upwardly mobile.

Though no one seems able to prove the rule, if you questioned the generations before you, likely they would just tell you that wearing white after labor day just wasn't done, so they didn't. For years, I, too, followed this rule and put away my white colored pieces until the following Spring.

But rules are made to be broken, right? If you open any fashion magazine this Fall, you will see that white is a trend color and it's being worn in all kinds of ways. It's considered glamourous and beautiful, and understated in a wonderful kind of way. So, say, can you still wear your white denim now that Labor Day is past, well, yes, yes you can.

Let me though, give you a few tips on how to wear it, if wearing white is your pleasure.

When wearing white, choose to pair it with a darker color. See pic above. Color Blocking is a big deal this season and if you can wear black and white together (Clears, Deeps, Cools) then choose to wear a pair of white jeans, a solid, deeper hue tee and a black poncho or cape on top (all the rage this season, by the way.)

When wearing white after Labor Day, do pay attention to the type of fabric it is. Lighter weight fabrics like linen or guazy type cottons are for summer only so put those things away till next year. Denim and twills are fine, though.

You'll also want to put away your white shoes....as in ballet flats, wedges, heels. These are not a summer item. Replace with nude shoes, which happen to be trendy again (like last season) or ankle booties, all the while remembering to purchase your new Fall shoes and boots in a color that matches your hair for your best look, or a sassy print like leopard or zebra.

A white lightweight sweater top or cardigan is a terrific way to continue wearing white after Labor Day. Wear with your dark jeans or trouser pants.

Fun stuff, huh? So if you're mother or office mate or BFF asks you why in the world you're wearing white after Labor Day, tell her,

"Why, didn't you know? NOT wearing white is so passe!"

Free to be Me

Today as you read this, I am relaxing on the beautiful island of Cayman Brac in the Cayman Islands. I'm likely resting in a hammock or bicycling to the waterway. Whatever it is I'm doing, I'm sending up prayers of thanksgiving and gratefulness because today, I turn 50.

That's a pretty big number so in preparation for this day (it's one of those birthdays you prepare for) I've had much to consider and think about so today's blog post is a little bit different. I hope you'll read all the way to the end and allow me a non-fashion kind of post.

So what's it like to be 50?

Not too many years ago I thought that people who were 50 were really old. They likely had no fashion sense and probably wore polyester and slippers most of the day. I'm sure I thought all 50 year olds had gray hair. I figured they were done doing new things and adventure was not part of their vocabulary. I also worried that when I turned 50 that the rest of my life would be boring. Seriously. I also hoped I would be happy because I figured the fun was over so I better be satisfied with where I was in my life.

Well let me tell you about what it's REALLY like to be 50...in my shoes (or wedge sandals).

First, I am so grateful that God picked me to be his girl. I like being on his team. You see, most of the time we wait around in life to be picked for things; committees, marriage, publishing contracts, etc....but my Pastor says we should stop waiting and pick ourselves. I like that.

I would say that I'm pretty much like that but in the case of Jesus in our lives, it's impossible for us to choose God without him drawing near to us first. He woes us and then we decide. But first, because he picked us. So, yeah, I like that he picked me. I like it alot. But as far as "picking myself" to do what I want to do in life, I'd have to say that at 50, I feel free to pick myself on most occasions. Like getting a vision from God and going out to make it happen. Yeah, that's definetly me at 50.

I also like, that at 50, I can dress up to go anywhere I want to. Even if it's just the grocery store or my son's ball games. Even if no one else is dressed up, I can do it because I want to, because it makes me feel good. Being 50 gives you confidence like that. You see, I'm not a jeans and t-shirt kind of girl, and I'm good with that.

I also like that at 50 I don't have to wait to get what I need in the form of gifts. My kids asked me what I "needed" for my birthday. Need? Nothing. And usually if I want something, I just go get it. That's pretty neat about being 50.

I also like that at 50, I don't have to change dirty diapers anymore. Perhaps I will one day when I have grandchildren, but by then, I won't mind it cause they'll be my grands...and then I'll be the "Glama"....oh yes, short for Glamour.

I like that at 50 I am solid in my relationship with the Lord. There's no doubt about my faith. At all.

I like that at 50 I can look my kids square in the eyes when they are doubting theirs and tell them to just trust...with boldness. And they believe me and doubt less.

I like that at 50 I can tell you I love cats and not care what you think about me. And one day I might even have a dozen of them. Because cats make me happy. I might be the crazy old cat lady and I'm okay with that.

I like that I have wisdom that I didn't have in my 20's and 30's....in fact, I really like the fact that I actually made it to 50 because I lacked so much wisdom when I was younger it sometimes amazes me that I am where I am.

But for the grace of God go I.

I like that at 50 I know without a doubt that my husband thinks I'm the most beautiful woman in the world (and in any room). Even when I look downright awful. Now that's a man worth keeping.

I am so very grateful that at 50 I have a sixteen year old son who wasn't part of my plan, but was part of God's plan. And that child is the light of my life.

At 50 I can tell you that being a stepmother to three amazing step-daughters is a true gift.

At 40 I wasn't so sure...you with me, step parents? But keep on keepin' on.

And so at 50, I can pretty much say, I'm free to be me...always and forever.

It's a pretty neat feeling.

I leave you with this thought as it relates to you....why wait till 50? Be comfortable with yourself just how you are, where you are, and the age you are. Because honestly, today is the day the Lord has made and we should rejoice and be glad in it. Really, really glad.

Moving into Fall with your Wardrobe

It's almost September, the weather is mostly warm, though some mornings you wake and there's a chill in the air, but your Summer wardrobe is still front and center. You're being tempted by all the new goodies at the mall or in the mags (or on the blogs) so how can you transition into Fall clothes without simply stowing your Summer things away?

Think simply and creatively. Do these two words belong in the same sentence? Let's see.

First: Think simple in terms of the basic pieces to transition with.

Jeans, leggings, walk shorts, skirts.

As you wear these bottoms into Fall, grab a sleeveless tank, and instead of adding your usual jewelry pieces, add a big scarf and wrap around your neck to CREATE glamour and sophistication. See, a simple scarf tied creatively adds Fall spice to your Summer wardrobe.

Top off your skinny jeans with a summer dress (wearing as a top) and add a blazer.

Voila, Summer meets Fall.

Or instead of wearing sandals, wear a sparkly ballet flat (all the rage) or boot instead.

Walk shorts: Add a lightweight jacket or denim jacket from last year's Fall clothes you already have.

Wear with closed toed shoes or clogs.

Wear your darker colored summer pieces and put away the lighter ones. These will look more like Fall, even if they're not.

Wear your summer dress with a pair of cowboy boots.

Wear a little more makeup on eyes or lips, or both.

There you have it. A few simple and creative ways to walk from Summer right into Fall. Easy.

Back to School Shocking

It's Back to School Shopping (Shocking) time again. Last week, my assistant Jill Marquis, took her teenage daughter shopping and in the middle of her shopping trip I got a text from her that simply said, "Shoot Me." Part of the reason she wanted to be put out of her misery is that so much of what is available to our girls these days is simply ridiculous. When she spilled the drudgery of her shopping trip I asked her to write this blog post. Read on:

I took my fifteen-year-old daughter shopping last week, along with about a gazillion other people, in an attempt to pick up some staples for the coming school year. Just a few tops and some jeans – that’s all we wanted. Now I won’t go into the trauma and drama that usually surrounds clothes shopping with a teenaged girl, that’s a whole other blog post, or maybe a book, but I will tell you about the latest fashions for teens that I saw. That’s what shocked me. And trust me, I’m not easily shocked. In the search for the ever-elusive perfect pair of jeans, we were in a very popular (judging from the crowds) place called the Wet Seal. This store caters to young women, selling everything from jeans to intimates. A lot of the clothes were fine, that is until I turned around and saw the wall of graphic tees. Lots of shirts with cute sayings on them, right?

Not so much…here are some examples:

I’m Not Shy, I Just Don’t Like You

Don’t Hate Me Because I’m Pretty

Everyone Here Is Awesome Except You

Shall I keep going?

Born This Way

Reckless

I’m Bad

If Your Single, So am I (They didn't even get the spelling right)

This is what society is selling our young women. What starts out as a bit sarcastic quickly moves right past suggestive and into propositions. But most of us don’t look at it like that – it’s just funny, a little suggestive, a joke.

But it’s not – the message is not subliminal, it’s a full on assault of our girls.

What do these pithy little sayings mean?

“I’m not responsible for my own actions, I’m Born This Way”.

“I don’t think things through, I’m, Reckless”.

“I’m Bad because I think it’s easier and more fun than making the right choice”.

“I’ll abandon my standards to be with you because If You’re Single So am I”.

“I have no self-worth, I’m desperate to be popular, desperate to be loved,

so do you Wanna Make Out?”.

And, in my opinion, the worst one:

“I will do what I have to in order to be noticed, I will cheapen myself, I will give myself away, I will be mean and hateful because Nobody Remembers The Nice Girl.”

Maybe I’ve got the messages wrong, maybe I’m crazy. It’s not like that’s what the shirts really say…but that’s what I see. And I see the insidious attack on our daughters’ minds that puts their souls at risk. All that from a little tee shirt.

Mom’s, talk to your daughters, engage their friends. Ask their opinions, share yours. Starting the conversation will open their eyes – while they might think it’s about fashion, it’s really about faith. - Jill Marquis, Event Coordinator for Shari Braendel

Ladies, talk and talk and talk to your daughters about what they wear. But don't just give them RULES, give them REASONS. Just like Jill stated above, tell them what the sayings on the shirts mean. Ask them if it's wise to spend their (or your) money in a store that sells items like this. I simply wouldn't spend one cent in a store that has clothes like that.

Help your daughters understand that she is beautiful and amazing. I know, I know, I'm preaching to the choir, but let's all stand together and refuse to shop in places that have such degrading things for our girls to wear. One person DOES make a difference. And one plus one plus one adds up.

Go BIG or Go home!

What? Yep, you heard me, Go BIG or go home!

As we head into Fall, it's important to us gals that we have a few tips to know how to look like we know what's going on in the fashion world or if we got left behind....life can do that to you, ya know. One day you wake up and realize that everything you're wearing is still from the 80's (especially in the accessory department) and here it is, 2011.

So that's where I come in.....Fall Fashion 101....help for the not-so-savvy....and for the savvy-savvy!

Last week I told you about the style of purse you should get this fall (the handheld bag) and this week we're gonna talk about ONE accessory.

You, however, get to pick what that ONE thing is. It might be a ring. It might be a pair of earrings or sunglasses. Whatever it is, however, it's important you go BIG! That's right, even you Glamour Girls and Movie Stars can go BIG like the Rock Stars, as long as we're talking about only ONE piece. Don't go crazy all over with BIG stuff, just pick ONE and let it be your stand alone, rockin' accessory that stands out in a crowd. It may even be a fabulous scarf or wrap. The way to make it work for you depending on size is the print...if you're a Glamour Girl (5'3" and under), go for a small to medium print or graphic; if you're a Movie Star (5'3"-5'8"), then go medium to large print and Rock Stars(5'8" and up), well, you know what to do!

For me, my motto has always been:

"It doesn't have to be real, it just has to be REAL BIG!"

And of course, being the Rock Star that I am at 5'11" I can do all things BIG, but if you are NOT a Rock Star and tend to be a Glamour Girl or Movie Star then stick to the one thing.

This Fall's KEY Accessory Trend

Hello my beautiful friends!

It's fall, it's fall, it's fall and I'm so excited to tell you about it AND be back with you!

I needed this restful summer...it did me so much good and God has been so gracious to give me the time to rest AND to fill me with beautiful dreams again. I suppose he never stopped giving me the dreams, but perhaps I just wasn't listening.

I'll be posting each week again, mostly on Wednesdays unless something comes up and I need to post on another day but for now, Wednesdays it is.

I don't know about you, but for me, I tend to look for a new handbag about twice a year. Once in early to mid August for a new fall/winter bag and then again in about early March for my spring/summer bag. You see, the one way you can look TOTALLY "IN" for a new season is knowing what style handbag to look for. So for my first bit of news for Fall, I'm bringing you handbag advice this week.

The main thing you need to know for this season is where the handle is. Yes, the handle.

The key accessory trend this season is THE HANDHELD BAG, so basically,

It's all in the way you carry it.

What to Wear Wednesday: The Dream Gene

Hey fabulous fashionista friends!

I know, I know, it's been a month since I've written and really I have no excuse except to say I needed a break. Thanks to those of you who sent sweet personal emails checking on me to make sure I hadn't slipped in the bath tub or fallen off one of my high heels...LOL.

I'm still alive and well and I have to admit to you that in the midst of my needing a break, I realized I had stopped dreaming.

Has that ever happened to you?

You see, I am a dreamer at my very core. And not just a dreamer who dreams up stuff and doesn't follow thru on it, but a dreamer who believes that the stuff she dreams up is God-given so it gets acted upon.

I have a dad who is an entreprener (I'm soooo sure I spelled that wrong) and I got the gene.

Some in my family would call it the crazy gene but I call it the dream gene.

When a person like me stops dreaming, well, you may as well put me out to pasture. I'm sure my 79 year old dad who just won the Senior Golf tournament in his neck of the woods would agree. If my dad ever told me he didn't stay up late anymore at night coming up with new ideas I'd think he wasn't feeling well.

So basically, I got so busy with my speaking engagements and traveling, that when I was home I would just sort of daze out. I hired a conference manager a few months ago so the stuff that kept me busy before wasn't doing that anymore. But instead of embracing my newfound freedom, I sort of went into limbo. And the dreaming stopped. For a few months, actually.

And I believe that's probably the main reason I stopped writing on my blog...or sending out a newsletter....or returning a lot of emails.

I was outright tired and I stopped dreaming...

I was outright tired SO I stopped dreaming...

I was outright tired BECAUSE I stopped dreaming...

Yes, I think that is it. I may even have stopped listening to what God was saying to me.

Ahhhh, the best words I know. I'm happy to say that last week I held my June CIC class and I got so pumped and on fire that I started dreaming again...and now I'm acting on them....watch out because you might get included somewhere in my dreaming....it's all good stuff....some new fun plans....and I'm excited again....and wouldn't you know, I'm not feeling so tired anymore...hmmmm! God is so good, isn't He?

So girls, no fashion advice today, just a little bit of stuff from my heart.

I will be leaving Saturday for almost 3 weeks...and when I come back, you can bet that I'll let you in on some of my new plans...until then, know that I love you and appreciate you.

I'll be taking time off until the first week of August so be on the lookout for my new dreams then.

What to Wear: Last in Color Series: SOFT

Hi gals! I pray you are well and gearing up for summer break....do any of us REALLY take a break? I try to, but if you're anything like me, you most likely have to force yourself to, or carve out time to make sure you do it. I hope you are thinking about something fun you'll be doing this summer and it makes you smile when you think about it.

I think I've sort of been on a 'mind-break'. I'm not sure that's the word, but recently, my mind seems to want to rest. It might be because I'm coming off my busy season, but gracious, how long can one's mind take a break? LOL. I actually forgot that yesterday was my regular blog post day so as you can see, this is Thursday, and it's What to Wear Wednesday's post..haha!

This is the LAST post in our series on COLOR. Today we talk about SOFT....you know who you are...you're the gals who can't wear black...or rather SHOULDN'T wear black because of your medium coloring...also because black makes you look a whole lot older. Can you wear black on the bottom half of you? Well, you can, but I'd recommend just moving it on out completely because unless you're an X body type (balanced), then the black bottom will just be an attention-getter...cause the majority of body types gain weight somewhere below the waist....tummy, hips, thighs, butt....so even though black is considered a 'slimming' color, (but so is any dark color, like brown, navy, charcoal) it also will go completely against coordinating with your DCC (dominant color characteristic).

So who is SOFT? Well, if you've ever described your hair as: dishwater blonde, mousy brown, dark blonde to light brown...then you might be SOFT. If you have light to medium skintone and pretty much any color eye, and you have at least 2 of those qualities I just described, then you might be a SOFT.

Now let's take a look at some makeup that would be pretty on a SOFT. Keep in mind the most important thing is for you to keep your makeup natural looking....when it gets too dark or bright, it becomes clown-like....so be careful when applying lips and eyes, especially. Therefore, all makeup for a SOFT should be 'medium' in intensity, as you will see below.

Keeping in mind that if you are only going to have ONE purse or handbag in your wardrobe, then your best bet is to match your hair in a close manner. If you want MORE than one, then a pop color is great too...take a look at some beauties!

Beauty You Can't Loose

Welcome back, my friends! As I promised, today you are going to be hearing from my friend and new author Lynn Cowell. Lynn is a writer and speaker with Proverbs 31 Ministries, in fact, we have even gotten to speak together!She has been mentoring girls for over nine years giving her a lot of experience when it comes to young women. This includes insight into how they think and what they need. I am so excited as Lynn shares some thoughts from her new book for young women "His Revolutionary Love".

Lynn, women are so aware of their appearance, but I see this even more so in teen girls. How about you?

Shari, I am painfully reminded every morning of just how self-aware teens are. I believe it has a lot to do with how much we long for love. My 14 year old daughter stops in the kitchen each morning, looks at me and asks “Do I look ok?” She is looking for approval, affirmation, and acceptance and she looks to me for it.

I think we all look for approval, affirmation and acceptance, even after those tough teen years go by.

I mean, isn’t that at least part of the reason as women we dye our hair, work out at the gym and try to hold back on our Oreo intake?

We all have a desire to be wanted; it’s insatiable.

I believe its God given.

God created each one of us with this love gap; a gap that cannot be filled by any guys – be it a dad, boyfriend or even a husband. They simply do not have what it takes. It can’t be filled by the perfect job, amazing children or a house on the lake. This gap can only be filled by One.

Jesus. Oh the confidence and security that is unleashed when this truth is found!

* The truth that when He looks at us, He is not disappointed in us. He approves of us. He approves of you…and it has nothing to do with you! He simply finds complete joy in US!

* The truth that when He looks at us He sees no flaw. Read this out loud (yes…out loud!)

“All beautiful you are, my darling; there is no flaw in you.” Song of Solomon 4:7

This truth transforms our lives. This truth sets us free whether we are 14 or 74!

Now, just imagine if you had discovered this truth, that Jesus was crazy about you and could meet every love need you had, when you were 13, 16 or 19? How would your life have been different? What things would you have decided to do? What things would you have been empowered not to do?

You can be the one to bring this truth to a young woman. By passing on His unconditional, life-altaring love, you can be part of changing the next generation!

Happy Wednesday fashionista friends!

Ohhhh it's been way too long and I'm glad to be back! I've got lots of things in the works for you and I can't wait to finish our posts on the Color because it seems it's been going on forever!!!!

Next week you'll be hearing from my friend and new author Lynn Cowell regarding her new teen book called His Revolutionary Love and I know you won't want to miss that.

But for THIS week, I'm going to go over CLEAR so you can understand it more clearly...hahahhah...no pun intended but it just worked...LOL.

Here are some pics of CLEAR gals...take a look:

Notice that the main thing these women have in common is that they have high contrast coloring. This means that there is a big difference between their hair and skin, mostly. And the majority of CLEARs will have light or bright eyes, although not always...that's why I said it's the majority. Others will have hazel or dark brown eyes.

These gals can wear high contrast colors too....black and white looks fab on them. Or red and black...anything that is light and dark...or soft and bright...worn together.

Their makeup is best in berries, pinks, plums. Stay away from beiges and browns or anything too pale.

Now take a look at some colors that are AMAZING for CLEARs to wear:

What to Wear Wednesday: Effective Living Makeover

Dear blog readers....I love you so much! Today I am preparing and packing as beginning tomorrow, I will be speaking 8 different times in the next 10 days, will be on 8 different airplanes on 8 different days, and that doesn't include any layovers and those additional planes. I can't keep up with that. I only know that this next week is going to be one of those crazy, frenzied, but prayerfully, God-honoring kind of week,

because without Him, I couldn't do what I do, nor be any good to anyone around me.

So I'm taking this day to remind you, as I have to remind myself to make sure we're living effectively. I found this old post from 2008 and think it's appropriate for today. I pray this is a gentle reminder for each of you.

Before you read this, I hope you'll mark your calenders to watch me "live" next Wednesday, April 13th on Focus on the Family's Webcast broadcast. Here is the link for that: CLICK HERE. I hope you'll support me in that and pray that God uses me for His glory.

I know this is a fashion blog but as I was pulling out my journal today to begin praying over specific prayer requests I came across something from 2004. I attended a Leadership conference at The Billy Graham Cove led by Pastor Jim White. As I was reading it I realized we all could use a little reminding of what he taught. He said the #1 most important thing for effective leadership is our personal spiritual life. That hit me because I had a conversation with a new friend last evening over an area in her life that is really bothering her. It actually has her not being able to get out of bed due to its depressing nature. As we talked we decided it may be as much a spiritual problem as physical. I know that when my spiritual life has not been watered I am dry, dry and end up depressed. When I spend time with God, He's in control instead of me feeling like I can do it all by myself.

You are a leader. I am a leader. We are all leading something. You don't have to have a ministry to lead. You don't even have to have a family. It starts with me. I have to lead "me" before I can lead anyone else. And if left to my own rotten self, my leading would pretty much be in the gutter. So here is some advice from Pastor James Emery White on how to do this:

1. Recognize that you are not spiritual. Know that you are not strong. All God's giants have been weak men and women.

2. You must have a STRONG resolve to stay connected to God. One of the first things to go is the personal care and attention to our own spiritual life. You must be intentional about it.

3. Develop a "rule" for your life and follow it. A rule is a set of disciplines-it's doing what it takes to live the life you want.

4. Bible: read it. But not just any reading. Spiritual formation comes when you read for reflection. The idea is to read the bible very slowly and contemplatively. Less volume-for more life change. You must listen deeply and then meditate on what you read then you pray thru to get what God is saying to you. "Feast" on a verse.

5. Pray. This is our inward movement toward God. This is when I lay out the inward pieces of my life and He returns them to me. It's when we praise, honor and thank Him. It's when I START my day with prayer that I open up my whole day to continual prayer. It's when I really do give Him the floor. I am tapping into the resources of heaven.

6. Silence and solitude. This must be part of the "rule". Go be by yourself. The great advantage of the evil one is to drown out our senses by outside noises...tv, music, movies, ipod. Fasting heightens our spiritual senses.

Retreat by yourself. There are 4 retreats you must take: Daily (quiet time), 1 per month (8 hours), 2 per year ( 36-48 hours) and an annual sabatical (3-5 days). Ask yourself, what do you do that puts gas in your tank? Go do that...alone.

A "rule" is a collected set of organized disciplines that we live by. These must be developed over time. The goal is to have Christ formed in you.

We are ALL called to provide spiritual leadership. For our families, our children, but first, for ourselves. I challenge you today to make some rules for yourself. Start slow. Spend some quiet time RIGHT NOW if you haven't already. If you're at work, get up and go to the restroom and be still...find a place at lunch today to be by yourself. If you're at home, get 5 minutes alone. You will be so glad you did....God is waiting.

Now jump in His arms.

FYI Friday!

It's Friday, so it's Q&A day!

Q: I am a cool with salt/pepper hair. My question is, are all ladies who have gray or salt/pepper hair cool? -Melinda

A: Most are, but there are some who fall into the Clear or Deep category too, depending on how MUCH gray they have and how dark their hair is. It's all about what's dominant.

Q: I took the color analysis and it says I am a Clear. But the characteristics for Deep are similar to the ones listed for Clear. What is the difference between Deep and Clear? -Cynthia

A: The difference is the color of the skin and the color of the eyes. Most Deeps have a more medium complexion compared to a lighter complexion for Clears. And Deeps never have blue or bright green eyes, (some have hazel) but Clears can have blue, green or dark brown eyes. And typically, Clears have darker hair than Deeps...but again, not always. It's all in the individual.

Q: I love that middle dress in the last picture on your blog post for the Lights. Are you able to tell us where the pictures are taken from? -Deborah

A: I get asked that question alot, regarding where I find the pics so you can buy them, but honestly, I get them everywhere and because I'm usually getting lots of pics for each blog post I simply can't keep track of where they are from. I sure wish I could though!

Q: My husband and I are attending a benefit event to which we are to wear "cocktail attire". My usual is "sippy cup attire"! I am not sure that my "little black dress" from 10 years ago, although it still fits, is appropriate for this mid-30's mom! Can you give some "cocktail attire" examples? Thanks! -Nikki

A: Oh Nikki, you have me laughing! "Sippy Cup Attire" is just not gonna cut it! And I'm afraid your LBD from 10 years ago might not cut it either, but I'd have to see it to be sure. I'd love to know what your DCC is but since I don't I'll answer this for everyone.

Simple, solid colors are best if you want to have something you can wear over and over again and not have it be remembered. I'd recommend going for a sweet, classy dress that's knee length or shorter and one that has a bit of sparkle so you can go minimal on the accessories and rock the look with a pair of fabulous heels. Find a dress that's in a color from your swatches that is in a deep to medium shade. Another great color would be a silver, copper or nude shade if it suits your DCC. Here are some great styles for your viewing pleasure. And for these pics I'm showing WHERE you can get them!

Yes, the above dress is black but I love it! Great for an X body type but the top part is crocheted! It's also from Kohl's and about $95 too.

I adore this dress!!!! It has animal print panels in the pleats and a shrug for those of you who don't like to show your arms. It's at Catherine's for $75 and comes in size OX-5X.

I wish I could tell you I had a fabulous, relaxing week in Florida but my husband ended up getting really sick and we couldn't go! He is just now better beginning today. Happy Wednesday to you!

I'm taking a break from blogging for this week AND next week because I'm heading out to Spring Break with my family and I really need to rest from work.

I wanted to let you know that I won't be returning for 2 weeks....I'll be back on Wednesday, March 23rd.

This is my absolutely crazy time of year and so I'm building in some breaks for myself. However, what I will get caught up on over the next few weeks is sending out some prizes (long over due...so sorry) and some playing with my family.

Before I go, though, I would LOVE it if you would PRAY for my son LUKE as he is traveling with me to Wisconsin today to speak with me at a TEEN Conference at Faith Christian School and their surrounding communities youth groups (all girls and their moms, too.) I'll be speaking on modesty, how to dress, inner beauty, too and also presenting a fashion show, then Luke will take the stage. Hey, if you're nearby, come on!

Luke is 16 years old and has a beautiful heart for Jesus.

He's very sold out to Christ and his talk tonight is on how to be an

influence for Christ in your schools.

I'm so humbled that the Lord would use him like this....and this mama will have her stomach in knots while he takes the stage. Okay, after saying this, I guess you know that to be LIGHT your coloring is NOT dark...LOL.

You can wear silver or gold accessories.

MONDAY MAKEOVER: Linda Brown!

Happy Monday to you!!!!!

Before we get started I want to thank those of you who were on our first-ever Webinar last night! Oh my goodness I think we (my hubby and I) were a hot mess because it was my first try at this and Dave had to help me...oh gracious...I was poking him so hard on his back to change the pictures on the screen he has a dent this morning! Oh dear. But I appreciate the sweet, kind comments you left me, and the texts and emails afterward....they make my heart happy!

Today we feature LINDA BROWN!

She is the friend of Jeannie who came to Boot Camp in January...you know, the one who convinced Jeannie to come along with her? Jeannie was featured a few weeks ago, so this week, it's LINDA!

Linda is a hospital administrator in Oklahoma and we had such a blast at bootcamp. Linda is a Classic Modern who just needed some updating to bring her "classic" a little more "modern" !!!!

Here we go! First, her BEFORE picture:

Now let's hear from Linda:

Bootcamp for me was such an awesome experience! I was so excited to

have the opportunity to have my own personal "what to wear" makeover.

So, inviting my best friend, Jeannie, along this experience was the perfect

thing for me! We packed up our required clothes to bring and I was

ready with my list of questions. I wanted to get all the answers so I

could dress in the right clothes, get the right haircut and have a

style that would make me beautiful. (You see, I had obviously been

watching too many episodes of tv shows that gave me that mind set.)

However, it didn't work out quite that way: I finally got it!! The

very best thing I got from Beauty Boot Camp was that God loves me as I

am, and that I am beautiful exactly in the body that God gave me. I

had such a WONDERFUL experience. I have a new sense of being "put

together" using the tools and knowledge to dress my body with

confidence, to look and feel better about how to portray God's love in

me!

My work clothing consists predominantly of suits. Shari showed me how

to use the clothing styles that flatter my shape to change the look

from somewhat severe (and what at times felt frumpy) to a much more

classic modern look. It's a good thing that black is one of "my

colors" because I have lots! However, playing with the RIGHT colors

and style really made all the difference. The most "ah ha" for me was

taking my newly identifed clothing style into my "off work" wardrobe.

Talk about out of the box for me! How fun to think differently about

my style. And I loved learning to accessorize the right way!

One of the other great things that was an extremely valuable lesson

for me was that by knowing what are the right things to have in my

wardrobe, I don't need as many or random pieces of clothing. Now I

have a plan so that items go together. I came home and did some

closet cleaning, to get rid of the things that did not work for me,

and complete my plan for what I can add over time. It's going to be

great to spend less time and money and actually have what really does

work for me to wear! .

At boot camp, I made some great new friends, learned so many things

about color and style, how to accesorize and dress my body, and how to

enjoy being me, the person that God created as His own!!! And I got a

great new sassy haircut, too!

it's FRIDAY!!!!!

As you are reading this, I'm either on a plane or already in Palatka, Florida where I'm speaking this weekend with my friend MaryBeth Whalen at a women's retreat...how fun is this going to be?

We even decided to stay over an extra night just to have some girl time!

And then back on Sunday just in time to join many of you on my first ever WEBINAR!!!!! I hope you'll be on it! If not, what's stopping you?

Okay, here's your questions for this FRIDAY!

Q: When it comes to column dressing, how do I wear blue jeans? Do you wear blue tops or do you go with something different? Can I wear pattern at all or should I stick with solids. Not sure if others struggle with that too but I know I have been a little confused. Thanks for all you do!

A: Good question! As for column dressing, if you are a b or o, then your column must be built with your inside pieces (if you have 3 pieces on).

If you are wearing jeans, then you don't have to wear a blue top, but you want to wear a top that has the same intensity in color. Here's a look at at a few examples:

See, they're not EXACT in color, but close. This will help your tummy to look a little LESS FLUFFY!

The pic below is what NOT to do...notice how the red shirt ends at her full tummy and attention is drawn to that area. Take a look:

So, now what to do for the gals with a d body type? If you are wearing just

2 pieces, then you do like above, BUT if you are wearing 3 pieces, then you keep your outside pieces similar in color:

Not like this:

This is a NOT because the white sweaters ends at the fullest part of her thighs. (I know, I know, her thighs aren't big but it's the best pic I could find..so PRETEND her thighs are big, okay? LOL.

So what happens if you are an X body type? Pretty much, you can do it either way...EXCEPT, if you have a challenge area in the tummy or the booty, if that's the case, and when you gain weight it's in one of those areas, then pay attention to the column that's fits your challenge area the best!

Whew!

One more question...here it is, a question from Erin:

Q: Shari, I have a fashion question. I love the idea of nude colored shoes for spring/summer. However, I am a clear with black hair. I think that a black shoe is better. What are your thoughts? For example, I have a turquoise and white sundress. Black shoe?

A: Well, Erin, I'm so glad you're trying to follow the rules! LOL! Are you a rule follower? Sometimes that's a good thing, right?

So, you have a turquoise and white sundress...well here's the thing...and this is the answer for EVERY DCC, not just Clears....

If you are wearing a dress (or other clothes) that has an obvious answer to what color shoe, then you go with that...for example, if you have black on, then go with a black shoe, if you have on brown, then wear brown....go with that. It's when you have on something like a turquoise dress (like Erin's) or a green, or a red, or a pink, etc....this is when you go with your hair color to get the most head to toe look.

As in Erin's case, she has a turquoise AND white dress....I'd go for a metallic shoe in this case...or a printed fabric wedge with some turquoise in it....metallic is a great look for all of you espeically in the summer and spring months. Hope that makes some good sense to you!

What to Wear Wednesday: WARM

IT'S WARM WEDNESDAY!!!!!!!

Since COOL was featured last week, I thought it only appropriate to feature it's opposite this week.

So here ya go, some looks at some WARM pics:

A Warm gal has red hair...or strawberry blonde hair...or hair with LOTS of red highlights. She can be brunette but decided to go red and is staying red, so she is now Warm.

A Warm woman should stay away from pink....take a look at this pic if you don't believe me:

Even SHE thinks it looks terrible on her! Look at her scrunched up nose!

She's saying, "mom, what are you thinking???"

So what's a gal to wear if she is WARM?

Well, think AUTUMN....think SPRING....think peaches, yellow, browns, greens, orange, rust, beige. Think anything leopard...like this:

Warm's should be careful with black but can wear it if they wear gold jewelry with it...no silver.

Speaking of jewelry, gold is best at all times, but a silver/gold mix is fine.

IF you wear silver, then you must wear a definete WARM color with it.

BROWN is your best neutral. Not Charcoal or Black.

I saw the same person I see now. =)

I have learned to like myself over the past few years.

This is who I am. This is how I look.

50 years old. (How did that happen?!?!)

In the 27th year of our marriage.

2 adult sons – both soldiers.

A beautiful daughter-in-law.

2 precious grandsons.

All of them now three hours ahead of us! =(

I am an elementary school teacher and a life-long learner.

I love to read & write,

work out to DVDs & walk in the warm, sunshine

(& roller blade about once a month),

bake bread & cookies,

and try to grow/improve mentally, physically, and spiritually.

Q: Did this book affect you spiritually? If so, how?

This book proved to be another milepost in my journey.

There were things I knew,

things I needed to be reminded of,

and things that provided a new lens to look through.

Every chapter offered spiritual encouragement.

I found it refreshing to consider fashion from a Christian perspective!

Q: What was your favorite chapter and why?

Well, my biggest goal was to create a plan for my wardrobe –

What was working & what needed to be purchased?

How can I get the best bang for our bucks?

Chapter 3 (What’s Your Score?) really made the most impact though.

And I am still counting my accessories every morning –

even when I am dressing to clean those bird cages! HA-HA

I am not a big jewelry wearer, and need to get on board with the new style of scarves, but I do not stop until I get to my 14 points each and every day.

And sometimes I even make it to 16! =)

Q: What practical steps did you take to give yourself this makeover?

That brings me back to my original goal –

I pulled everything out of my closet and drawers,

and started sorting and tossing.

Since I had administered color analysis back in the 80s,

I had a basic idea of what colors to buy.

But, between gifts and a few items that were more in-season colors,

I owned a few pieces of clothing that belonged in someone else’s closet.

And – wouldn’t ya know – these were items I didn’t like wearing!

I’ve lost 25 pounds with just about 10 to go,

and had already gotten rid of anything too big.

Now I have a small box of “goal clothes” in my closet.

And I am almost ready to take them out of that box!!

Plus I have a list of things to purchase as priorities and budget allow.

I have been checking off items little-by-little.

Q: What was the biggest challenge for you during this process?

BUDGET.

With a list in my purse,

I am not willing to buy just anything that catches my eye.

Those black boots are my first ever!

When I won my “lacey animal” tights from Shari,

my husband and I both agreed it was time to make that investment.

I am a quantity girl, but my quality husband convinced me to spend the money on a good pair of leather boots. And I LOVE them!!

(After buying the boots, I immediately went to Walmart to purchase a new purse!)

Q: What did you determine your clothing style is and do you like knowing this?

I am a Creative Original! WooHoo!!

I should have known, because I am the only teacher in my school with a leopard print, corduroy skirt! ;) And I am always on the lookout for something a little non-conforming. I dress up most days (jeans on Fridays) and prefer skirts with some kick to ‘em. And collars/necklines that aren’t too ordinary.

I wear my pearl earrings most days, but am mixing it up once in awhile now.

I would rather add clothing to my wardrobe, so have started wearing some jewelry my mother gave me a few years back. And it is older than me!

Plus, our youngest son bought me a bracelet from Afghanistan last year.

Black! It goes with so much of what I have!

Q: What was the most memorable or transforming part of all of this?

Being a creative original, I was tickled to get those tights from Shari!

I would never have bought them for myself. Black. Navy. Off-white.

But, let me tell you, I made a few people laugh the first time I wore them.

HA-HA (And many more just stared, but they do that anyway!) HA-HA

But I realized that I felt very comfortable in them!

I went out and bought some turquoise and red ones!! ($5 each at Target!)

Oh, and before the tights, my second grade girls thought I had a new outfit on one day. Since most of them had me in first grade, they had seen all three pieces of clothing before. Just not together! I am having fun mixing and matching in new ways!

Q: Who do you see in the mirror now?

A stylin’ Nana with 14 points to show for it! :^D

Q: Any final words for us?

Are you kidding?!?! I’ve already yapped your heads off!!

Q: Why do you recommend this book to others and what benefit does it have for someone who reads it?

I totally recommend GOOD GIRLS don’t have to DRESS BAD to all you girls!

It is the best thing out there that addresses overall style!

And from a Christian perspective!!

I bought it in August, and have already read it

3 times!

And talk about a reference/resource book –

This is the one I return to over and again!

Q: Shari, I love the idea of the Beauty Boot Camp. Unfortunately it is way out of my budget right now - especially considering travel from Michigan. Would there be a way to offer some of the same services or advice in a more affordable format and to reach a broader audience. Perhaps more regional weekend events? Or maybe something by video or phone conference? I agree that more pictures of outfits for each style and body type are always helpful. Perhaps you could feature one at a time. A: Ahhh, Jolene, this seems to be the question that keeps haunting me...or following me around, or something like that! First of all, I'm grateful you would love to come to bootcamp...because it really is sooooo much fun..and life changing, on so many levels. So here's what I'm thinking, and you guys can tell me your thoughts and ideas and you can tell me if any appeal to you:

A Personal One on One Skype Session (1 hour)
A Group Webinar on a Particular Topic (1 hour) (Where you can see me but I can't see you but you can type in questions)
A Group Conference Call (1 hour)

As for pricing, a one on one skype session would be the most expensive, followed by the webinar, followed by the conference call.

What to Wear Wednesday: Color Series Begins!

You asked for it, so now you're getting it!

We had so much fun learning about the Fashion Personalities that now I'm going to bring you a series on

COLOR!

As I was thinking about which one to start with I received an email from someone and because of her email, we are beginning with

COOL...baby.

Before we get to her email, I want to take the time to explain the COOL category. See here's the thing. Many of you are already gray...or silver....or white haired....but you color it up, right? And for many of you, that's a fine thing to do. But then there are some of you who struggle all the time just trying to KEEP those grays hidden.

(If you THINK this COOL section is NOT for you....please keep reading....because one day you MIGHT need this info...and perhaps like the woman who sent me the email, it's for you now, but you don't THINK it is..ha!)

When it comes to color, remember, the BEST COLORS for you to wear for your clothes and your makeup is determined by your

DOMINANT COLOR CHARACTERISTIC...that is, what is MOST dominant about you when you walk into a room. It has to do with your skin, your eyes, and your hair color...typically, your NATURAL hair color....but in most/many/all/some cases you don't know what that natural color is anymore...hint hint..smile, smile.

So let's go over it.

You are COOL...if your MOST dominant, outstanding feature is your gray or silver hair. You might have pinkish skin tone to go with that hair (or you might not) and you may have blue eyes (or you might not.)

You see, when you have GRAY or SILVER hair, THAT is what is MOST dominant about YOU. Therefore, it really doesn't matter what your skin or eye color is because when you walk in a room, your HAIR is what others will see first on you. And because of this,

YOU MUST DRESS TO COORDINATE WITH YOUR Gray or Silver HAIR!!!!!!

If for you, you are having too much trouble coloring your gray hair, then you might want to consider going all gray...as in the case of the woman I'm featuring today. (Not every week will I feature a real live woman...but in this case, her email to me was just so timely I had to include it.)

Here's her email:

Dear Shari, This is Tamara...No doubt you remember me from the Girl's Getaway Cruise, but just in case, I am the Creative Memories Consultant that was appalled that your assistant suggest I stop colouring my hair and celebrate my natural "greyhood". Well... I took the plunge and am now officially grey, although I wouldn't really say "grey", but rather white/silver/blue grey,

Everyone, and I mean everyone,

says that they love it on me

and a few even said that they were willing to give it a try themselves!

I am finding that my clothes look better on me, my make up is more attractive, and I feel really good about myself!

I mean, she's a beautiful woman no matter WHAT her hair color, but the natural gray just makes her look pretty darn sexy, too!

I know it's a little hard to see here but it's at least a sampling. The best colors for a Cool are anything with a blue undertone....so that means NOTHING with a yellow undertone....okay, so what does that mean?

GOOD Colors: Blues, Pinks, Purples, Rose, Black, Gray, Charcoal, Greenish blues, White, Silver Accessories, Zebra Print, etc.

BAD Colors: Yellow, Browns of all shades, Beiges, Tans, Gold Accessories, Leopard Print, etc.

A Makeover of the Heart: Daphne Roberts

Happy Valentine's Day!

I pray that today brings you much joy and that this special blog post brings a smile to your face.

My special guest today is Daphne Roberts. Daphne has been a reader of my blog for as long as I can remember having blog readers....much like many of you...and I am sooooo grateful for that. Daphne's makeover is of the "heart" kind...as well as the visual kind. Daphne has opened her heart up to share her struggles with cyclical depression and how her makeover affected her overall well being.

Let's meet her now....and I'm showing her first pics in her before and after COMFY clothes....look at how simple changes in color (she's a DEEP, so by adding a comfy sweatshirt in the RIGHT color brightens her up). Take a look:

Happy Valentine’s Day, ladies! In honor of the day, I am sharing a story from the heart with you. I pray that this touches some of you and helps anyone who may go through similar times.

I’ve been faithfully following Shari’s blog for over a year. I love the practical, Godly advice that she gives to us “regular” gals.

I sent the Makeover questionnaire and some pics to Shari a couple weeks ago, in the midst of what I call a “downtime,” and as I started to come out of that, I looked at it again and cried.

It seemed like a mask over what my life really is. I felt like I had given canned, expected answers…truth, but not at all what I was really feeling.

You see, I suffer from cyclical depression, among other things. It is something that I’ve been aware of for years, but wasn’t officially diagnosed until a couple years ago after I had already been diagnosed with some heart issues and sleep apnea. I never quite know when it’s coming, but I sure do know once I’m a couple days into it!

When I was diagnosed with the other things, I made some changes to become healthier. I lost 50lbs and was only 4lbs from my goal weight. Then the Dr. put me on meds to treat the depression. I gained 10lbs in 3 days. It also made my heart issues worse, so we changed meds. I gained another 5lbs. Somehow, that just didn’t seem to help the depression! I lost my motivation and, since my self-worth had become tied to my weight loss, I lost my sense of who I was.

That was a year ago. I’ve lost a bit of the weight again, but am working harder to rediscover myself in Christ.

My wonderful husband has always been so loving and supportive. I have never felt anything less than treasured by him. The Lord blessed me beyond measure when He brought us together!

It has been with his loving kindness that I’ve come to see just how much this affects our family and I’ve been trying to work through the tough times in a more positive way.

He bought me Shari’s book for Christmas and I read it in a day!

I became overwhelmed because I saw so many “problems” in myself that needed attention! He gave me a big hug and reminded me that God didn’t do it all in one day, so it was ok for me to take baby steps. He has encouraged me to buy some new things that fit into our budget and will expand my wardrobe options.

The second week of January, I could feel myself slipping into a “downtime.” I resolved to remember what I had read in the book and to not spend the next couple of weeks in pj’s or sweats! I didn’t want to even run to the grocery store that way, anymore! I focused on remembering that I am a beautiful creation and that I am WORTH taking care of…please allow me to share a few things that I worked on during that time.

First of all, shower right away in the morning.

I’m not kidding when I say that there are days when that seems like too much and if I put it off, it doesn’t happen. Secondly, wear real clothes. I found that for me, even a coordinating lounge set or track suit is better than pj’s or sweats. I actually have a picture here of the set that I bought. I’m a DEEP, so I have black pants and a dark raspberry colored top. Another tip is to do just a little bit with your hair. I really do mean a little, too. I spend about 3-5mins most days; just enough so that it doesn't look like I just got out of bed.

Also, you’d be surprised sometimes how far a quick swipe of pressed powder, mascara and a little lip gloss will go!

We home school our 2 beautiful children, so another trick for me was to smile at my kids and give them hugs throughout the day. The biggest help has been to really give this over to God. I find myself talking to Him a lot more now and it’s easier to get through a day knowing that He’s right there beside me. It’s not that I don’t still struggle, it’s that

I know that I’m not struggling alone.

On to today's QUESTIONS...for FYI Friday!!!!!

Here we go:

Q: I've been rolling this one around in my head this past week.

Back in the 1900s (late 80s/90s), your correct color just needed to be near your face.

But I am now wondering if I should even have khaki/tan pants or skirts in my wardrobe.

What's your opinion on this? Thanks! Diana

A: I think the reason color experts said you only had to wear the correct colors near your face is because no one wanted to be so bossy to tell you to wear the right colors all the time....and then along came Shari....hahahahaha!!!!!

Sooooooo, as you begin to wear your best colors, you def want to keep them near your face. BUT, in order to build a successful wardrobe that will mix and match, all the time, from season to season, you will eventually stop buying the wrong colors (even on the bottom!) and replace with the RIGHT colors...even ON your bottom!

So, bossy Me tells you to start buying khaki and tan....for pants and skirts, too...if khaki and tan ARE your best colors...if not, you know what they are.

Q: Black twill pants - even the ones that are supposed to resist fading fade so quickly. I've tried the trick for jeans that you use, Shari, but it doesn't seem to work on twill. Any suggestions? Thanks, Carol

A: You may already do this, but you MUST wash them inside out. And honestly, that's the best thing I know to do other than the tip I gave you in the book that you seem to already know about. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, to maintain the consistency of dark color jeans, simply soak them in warm water with a cup of salt for about 20-30 minutes, then wash inside out using a cold water rinse.

Q: Does someone always tend to fall into one style category (Fashion Personality?) Because I know my mood changes a lot (thank you, horror-mones). And with my mood change I like to change up my look...am I a bi-polar dresser? or what? lol, I guess I do kind of relate to Creative Original, but not fully...idk...:) I go from girly and romantic, to hippie, to classy, to rock n roll, to whatever...lol -Mariah

A: Oh Mariah you're cracking me up...and I'm sure everyone else is cracking up too after reading this! Horror-mones????? Now THAT's a good one! And Bi-Polar Dresser???? Girlfriend!

See, here's the thing. The reason for the style categories is because most women need guidance on figuring out how to put things together...hence the style categories make it so much easier....it also helps to know what your style category is so you can shop and know WHAT to buy. Most women are mainly ONE category and then can add accessories from other categories to go outside of their fashion style box. But we all know, dear Mariah, that you are a fashionista and can probably wear all of them...and look good too! Love ya! Mean it!

Q: Do you have some pictures or suggestions on how to wear scarves if you're a Pure Natural? I want to try to do the scarves thing, but am unsure of how that would look. For some reason, they always look pretty on other gals, but seem silly on me when I wear them. I have just taken to wearing my outdoor scarf around the office when it's cold. But I'm sure that's cringeworthy :) Thanks!! Kathy

A: Good question! The most important thing is to wear a scarf that is a natural light weight fiber like cotton. Then simply wear it around your neck either draped in front or close around your neck. Here are three pics to help you visualize how they might look:
