What to Wear Wednesday: Classic Modern

Are you a Classic Modern? Well, today is the day to find out!

The last two weeks I've been featuring
fashion/clothing personalities so you can determine what style suits you best. It's been fun to read your comments and it's also been fun writing the posts, too!

This week I am featuring the Classic Modern style of which many of you will likely relate to.

Here's the thing: Classic styles are always in. What you have to remember when dressing in classic pieces, however, is this; don't forget the second part of that term: MODERN.

Classic is good. Outdated is NOT. In dressing in a classic modern style, choose styles that will last, that have style, but bring "today" into them. You'll want to 'edge' it up a bit.

Take a look at some Classic Modern styles and see if you can relate:

The thing about being a Classic Modern is that in most cases, you're going to build your wardrobe around basic colors like black, navy, white, cream, tan and denim blue. To modernize it, you add a POP of color or a POP of a powerful accessory...like a trendy bag, colored accessories, a big ring or watch, or even a pop of red nail polish.

Take a look at some of these pics to see what I mean:

Now let's visit some amazing jewelry that will add splash to your basic, classic wardrobe:

Wanna see some great shoes that belong in a CM's wardrobe?
Here ya go:

And some Handbags:

And lastly, just a really cool collection of a mix and match wardrobe that I might find in your wardrobe...one day.
Isn't this a beauty?

Well, my friends, I pray you are having a beautiful day. I am at Arizona State University preparing to speak to hundreds of college students tonight at an event called
Sun Devils Wear Prada...
Fashion and Faith Walk the Runway

For those of you who are wondering where they came up with that name, it's cause they're the Arizona State Sun Devils! Pretty clever, huh?

So pray for me, to reach a multitude of
college students for Jesus. I continue to be amazed that I get to do this thing that I do. And know that each prayer that you say on my behalf and the behalf of the students who will hear the gospel, that you are as much a part of this as I am. You will see that one day. Don't ever think that your prayers don't matter. Because they do. More than you'll ever know on this side of glory. I appreciate you being in the trenches with me.

Love you girls!
Shari

Okay, please hang in there with an almost hopeless fashionista wanna be. I think this is probably where I am...but my husband probably would prefer the first one (the trendy). Any time I go shopping and find things that I think are good (read: classic), he tells me it is old lady, or grandma, etc. I honestly am paralyzed anymore when it comes to shopping. I think if I could xcratch everything and start over, maybe I would be okay, but I am struggling with building with what I have. Anyway, my question is, how would I dress in Classic Modern style and still keep my husband happy who is more trendy? Does that make sense?

Well Shari, this is certainly me! Always knew I was a classic style dresser, but thanks for the inspiration to take it up a little to "modern"! Love the suggestions and I'll be taking notes to the store with me! This is adding fun to the basics I so dearly love!

Oh my goodness, I am so excited! I wasn't sure what I was although I thought I was a CM. The thing that held me back was that my mom is a CM, but leaves out the "M" part and I was not excited to be in that same catagory (I love my mom, I just don't want to dress like her!). :) I LOVELOVELOVE that last compelation of clothes - the mix and match stuff. LOVE it! And I love how you combine classic stuff with some very fun stuff, like leapord print flats, that awesome little black and white sweater... excitement! Thank you! And praying for you as you reach out to the college students. May God receive much glory!

One More Equals Four - I think just adding trendy jewelry and accessories would be a good start. It is amazing how those things can revitalize a wardrobe!

I am a CM and have had so much fun since reading Shari's book! One More Equals Four - my husband said the same thing! Now that I am adding the fun accessories & shoes to "modern" it up a bit he is very happy with the look :). Good luck! Praying for you Shari as you speak today. - Mary

I am definately a Classic Modern. I am so glad you pointed out that you can be Modern AND Classic. Like Stephanie said we don't want to dress like our Moms (who we dearly love). I even have that very same Coach purse you showed in a beautiful pop color of purple. I am a deep and build my wardrobe around black and denim but I love, love, love adding color to it in my accessories. Thanks for all you do, Shari, and praying for you at AZ State.

I also am a classic modern; you have given me some great ideas about adding accessories! I’m praying for you today; knowing that God will lead and direct you with the young college students.

Father in Heaven. Your Name is Holy. Your servant Shari is in your hands. Use her mouth as yours to reach a grand number of students at Arizona State today. May your Name be Glorified. Amen in Jesus precious name.

Shari,
After I read your book I identified myself as a Pure Natural, but after reading your postings these past few weeks I am confused. Is it possible to be in between Classic Modern and Pure Natural - does Classic Natural exist?...

Praying for you as you speak to the college students today. It's a blessing to be included in your ministry!

Yep, I'm classic modern!! And LOVE LOVE LOVE what you've posted for ideas for me! The last 4 years I've been fortunate to host a Premier Jewelry party every November!! My jewelry collection is AMAZING!!
I love that you do what you do!

I love basically all of the jewelry!!! Where did these pieces come from? I'm a jewelryaholic!

So, I thought I had Pure Natural leanings with Classic Modern as the dominant but after seeing the posts this week and last week I am definitely a Classic Modern. I just like to be comfortable at the same time. I've had similar thoughts about classic and not wanting to look like my mom (or my grandma!) but now I see it's really about having a couple of modern pieces to spice up the basics. And I can absolutely do that with accessories.

Also, I had never thought about building my wardrobe around only 2 or 3 colors. Great ideas, as usual!!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE the first necklace and the 3rd pair of shoes you posted. Where can I find those? Thanks!

HI Shari!

I was wondering where you found those great pieces of jewlery, especially the first two pics (cross necklace)? Would love to pick those up! Thanks!

Can you tell us where to find the clothes and accessories in the pictures? I am the type that gets paralyzed when I go to the mall, but looking at the pictures today, I thought, "I love all of thesse outfits. Can I just order them from here?" LOL.

Thank you for helping all of us, Shari.

Question for You- When I was at She Speaks two years ago, I was told I was a "Clear" and bought the swatches. Now, I've recently had my hair lightened and highlighted. Without my dark hair, there is very little contrast between my skin and hair. Is it possible to go from a clear to a soft just because your hair color changed? Thanks, Shari! : )

Nice to hear about your speaking engagements and know what's going on with you from that side of things.

I think that you should include "reports" about your trips. Starting with this one! :)

We'd love to see photos, vlogs (video blogs), and just a little write up report about what happened, behind the scenes stuff...

After reading your book I thought for sure I was a Pure Natural. But after seeing your examples on your blog, I know I am truly a CM. I think I was SO not wanting to be a CM because I related it to my banking career several years ago with styles that were more 'stuffy'. Thanks for showing us that we can be Modern but Classic. BTW, I am a MOM and GRANDMOM but I don't want to look dowdy!!

Any possibiity you can provide information on where to purchase these items?? I am definitely a Classic Modern and really love these clothes. I also get paralyzed at the mall. Knowing where to purchase these items would be a HUGE help!!!!

Hi Shari, I'm going to wait til you finish this series before I commit to a style, but I think I lean toward CM. Praying for your talks,

As usual, Shari, you did a great job giving us visuals for a style! I agree with Mariah in that I have yet to identify closely with one of the styles. I know what I like, but it doesn't fit neatly into one category. Prayers for you as you speak...you will be a blessing to the students! To God Be The Glory!!

Rebecca said...

I don't fit into one category either. I think I'm PN when I'm dressed more casually, and CM when I want to look more put together.

Mariah said...

also, I was wondering: Does someone always tend to fall into one style category? Because I know my mood changes a lot (thank you, horror-mones). And with my mood change I like to change up my look...am I a bi-polar dresser? or what? lol, I guess I do kind of relate to Creative Original, but not fully...idk...:) I go from girly and romantic, to hippie, to classy, to rock n roll, to whatever...lol

I think there's more Classic Modern in me than I realized. I'm going with Classic Natural. And whichever, I think I'm going to concentrate on building my wardrobe around one or maybe 2 colors. I go to the closet in the morning and have nice sweaters and my favorie style of pants, but it seems as though they don't go together.

Which brings me to (yet another) question. Black twill pants - even the ones that are supposed to resist fading fade so quickly. I've tried the trick for jeans that you use, Shari, but it doesn't seem to work on twill. Any suggestions?

I'm totally a classic modern. Love, love, love it. I've done a good job of popping it up with accessories and color and fun shoes...but I have way way too much black and gray, whereas I learned I should be brown and tans. Sigh. So I'm re-working it slowly!! Grrr.
