I had a great question from a reader and I thought the response was something I should share!
If you don't have a Kohl's store then use any store that you would like to shop at... it isn't Kohl's specific.

I live close to a Kohl's store. Would they have any good brands for a mid 30's woman? I think I'm closer to a classic modern. I'm trying to look age appropriate, nice, and of course modest . Thanks !

Hi Reader!
Kohl's has some great stuff! I tend to look for items that suit my color, then my body shape and then my fashion personality. Usually name brand is lower on my list of items to look at. I would stick to the Women's section of Kohl's since the cuts are much more age appropriate than the Junior's section.
When I go shopping next I will be sure to check my closet first and fill out the shopping list "Basics" so I know exactly what I should be buying and which items I really don't need.
For example: When I go shopping for a dress for an upcoming wedding I will go just to the dresses. My list shows that I need black footies for my flats and a new pair of black boots that would go with Jeans with a 2-3" heel. On my trip I can swing by the shoe area and try on a few things, I never have luck at finding the "perfect" pair on the first trip AND when I buy something because I "need it"... it usually end up settling for an item that just doesn't do the trick long term.
Having the list makes sure I am not bra shopping, pillow shopping, summer trend browsing or clearance rack wandering. Knowing that I need a dress that fits my body shape, matches my coloring and looks great gives me the confidence to walk away empty-handed.
I know this isn't an exact answer to your question, but I have found some Croft and Barrow items (a Kohl's exclusive brand) that are well made and well worth the cost. On the other hand I have found items that didn't look great to begin with and I purchased them anyways and ultimately the piece fell apart. Go with your instincts if you think that something will hold up.

There you have it readers! Make your list, stay in the right departments and don't be afraid to leave without finding what you were looking for. In my opinion shopping is only easy if I am getting socks and t-shirts for my husband... all the other times I have to be up for the challenge. Well hydrated, not too hungry, with patience, a plan and a sense of hope.

We have a great consignment store called Better than Before in our town and I go there first to look for clothes. I have found many name brand pieces for very reasonable prices. We are getting a Kohl's soon so I will be checking them out!
I start my shopping at JCP and then move onto other stores. I’m not brand loyal; I shop more like you Laura; color, body shape and personality. I keep a running list of my needs, something I have learned from Shari. There are times when I’m at the mall and get distracted but tell myself; I’m not here for that I’m here for this. :)
