Whew! You girls are good...and very observant. Thank you to those of you who did a great job on your homework...A for you!

It seems the women you picked out had only one thing in common. They looked sharp. Okay, that may seem rather silly to say, since I told you to pick out "sharp" women, but think about it. "Sharp" can mean all kinds of things. It can mean curly, angled, bob, angled bob, straight with layers, highlights, lowlights, sleek, short, long, red, blonde, brunette, silver. So I looked up the defintion of "sharp" on dictionary.com and one of the definitions was "very stylish". Do you realize that only one of you picked out someone with a ponytail, and even she had it hanging lower on her neck and was dressed well. You also didn't choose anyone whose hair was just long and hanging there. Each of you tended to choose someone who was put-together. She didn't need to be dressed up, however, you picked out women who were coordinated...or so it seemed.

My friend Zoe commented about what I told her awhile ago. That is: IF YOU HAVEN'T RECEIVED A COMPLIMENT ON YOUR HAIR IN THE LAST 2 WEEKS, IT'S TIME FOR A CHANGE. It's time for an appointment....probably with someone different than your usual hairstylist. It's time to sit down in someone's chair and let HER or HIM decide what is best for you. Yes, you can give her/him a few tips, like, "I prefer bangs, or I prefer a few blonde highlights, etc." But leave it at that. If I were a hairdresser, and I'm not, but if I were, the one comment I would HATE to hear from someone is this, "I don't care what you do, just make sure it's long enough so I can wear it in a pony tail." AGH!. WHY? Why do you want to wear it in a pony tail if it is the most unflattering hair style in the world....yes the WORLD? I remember once my hairstylist ,Michael, in Miami told me if I ever told him I wanted to wear my hair in a ponytail I wasn't allowed to go back to him! Now here's the next thing. That compliment I told you about receiving (or not!) in the past 2 weeks MUST come from someone other than a husband, child or best friend (unless she is really stylish.) But for the most part, compliments to determine if your hair is sharp or not, don't count when it comes from a family member. Just trust me on that. (Think back to Hair: Part 1, when 10 year old complimented mother.) So girls, it's time to go out in the world, find someone whose hair you really like, that looks sharp and ASK HER WHO CUTS HER HAIR. Get the number, and make an appointment.

For those of you who don't want to break the bank, go to the mall, get a coffee, take a book, and go sit out in front of one of those Hair Cuttery's, (you know, the inexpensive hair cut shops). Watch. Wait. See if you see women exiting that have cute haircuts. Find out which one of the hairdressers cut her hair. OR see which hairdresser has nice hair...sharp, if you will. She most likely doesn't cut her own hair (some do, but most don't). Ask her who does it. And make an appointment with him or her. They most likely work in the same salon.

Here are few options for you if you want to have sharp hair on a budget:
1. Check out the JCPenney salon.
2. A local beauty school.
3. Trade services with someone. Maybe you have something to offer that a hairstylist would like. I haven't paid for cut or color in probably 20 years. (Do they need a blog site, website, note cards, makeup, child care, housecleaning?)
4. A mom who has her license but doesn't work in a salon....she works out of her house, in the kitchen, but is half the price! Start asking around! I'll bet there's someone in your play group or bible study who would do just that. She just feels strange doing it in her kitchen but tell her you really don't mind....or have her come to your house.

Girls, there are ways to get your hair done without breaking the bank. Now go get dressed (cause if I remember right, all the sharp haired girls had a cute outfit on!) and get out in the world. No ponytails, make an appointment, sit down and let the hairstylist tell you what would look good on you. The reason most women don't like their hair is that they tell the hairdresser what to do.....what is that all about?!

Happy Day! And if you're visiting my blog for the first time from Crossroads Church, First Baptist of China Grove, or Front Street Baptist, HELLO! Welcome! It was fun being with all of you this past weekend and last night!

Beautiful Blessings, Shari

Ok, you know I'm your difficult child :) But I really am not sure what else to do with my hair.

My hair is thick and curly. I have never had really short hair (short to me is higher than shoulder length). My reasons for being able to wear a ponytail are playing softball and exercising -- those times when I get hot and sweaty. Oh yeah, and when I'm riding my motorcycle :) Keeps my hair from flying around.

Now I will admit most times I'm lazy and throw it up into a ponytail (please don't take my scrunchies away!), but if I'm dressing up or going out-out, I style it.

Oh, another complexity, the hair I seem to like on others is long and curly but they don't have bangs -- and I do. I have no idea if I should let my bangs grow out. I tried it once but they drove me bonkers.

Geez, didn't realize I had so many hair issues :D

Hi Shari...
Lisa..would you cut your hair just at shoulder length and add some long layers..let your bangs grow out to the first layer????

I am enjoying the Hair series Shari... I had to go out to the Dr's office this week, then on to Wal Mart..let me just tell you.. I didn't see but one woman that looked good..and she was very pregant! She had the similar "Posh, spice girl" hair style. Which I love that style..I'm going that way next I think..but no time soon.
Right now, I don't think I am changing my style..2 months ago, I cut 5 inches off..that was a big change. I go next week and I think I am going to add a few more layers but that is it. A friend actually told me, after I cut the 5 inches off, that I looked like Beth Moore!! Whoa..what a compliment! But I didn't let it go to my head, cause I didn't necessarily agree.
But..anyway..everyone else I saw, was just drab looking. Then again, I was at a Drs office. But even in Wal mart...just drab. I really think that where I am from there are not many people that will get sharp looking just to run out to the store. Me included!! I did get dressed nicely and do my hair and make up up that day though..didn't want to scare ya there.

Have a good day!!

I have a question concerning glasses. I am skeptical about wearing something dark or colorful on my face. I want people to see me not my glasses. Do you have any advice?

Hmmm...that's a really good question about the glasses. The style today is darker glasses...and they do look really cute as long as they're not too big. So I'd say go with it, cause otherwise you'll look outdated...never a good thing! And actually, the neat thing about glasses-wearers is that because they are obvious, it does draw attention to the face and eyes first...so that's good! I say, Go for it! Shari

And Alyce, What if there were women in Walmart looking for a sharp dressed woman and there you were?????? My saying is "you can never be overdressed!" But then, that's just me! Please don't go out scary looking....and next time you're looking for sharp people, stay away from Walmart!!!! Hugs! S.

Shari, I was driving home from purchasing a new bag for my 'speaking stuff'. I hope I picked the right one. I heard on the radio (Pensacola,FL) that after Miley Cyrus and the Vanity Fair episode that her aunt bought her a "Modest is Hottest" t-shirt.
She said she preferred modest. I thought of you and just wanted to share that tidbit of information. Chelsea, Miley, who's next? : } See you at She Speaks!

Shari,
I'm loving your posts. I can never hear your advice often enough. I'm always on the look out for the next thing that needs a bit of tweaking or "polishing".
Thanks friend.
I'm praying for your stamina and strength as you continue your marathon speaking tour.
Your "never over dressed friend",
Zoe

Thanks for sharing. I do put my hair dresser in the driver's seat. She wanted to do red highlights recently! My first ever highlights! We have been doing a gloss for a few years to keep the grays covered, but the highlights are too fun!

ok - I am late in reading these posts, but I am one of those that has the hair in the ponytail thing...can they ever look good? I have long blond hair and I wear it pulled back at the base of my neck (no bangs, so it looks like the girl's on CSI ..or one of those shows.) It did crack me up because the day I read this, I went to my girls friends house for a party and she just had her hair cut and everyone was complimenting her. I told them about your blog and your pony tail comments..they all chuckled. I will take the plunge, but I just can't envision saying "cut it shorter than
ponytail length." I love my hair pulled back...decisions, decisions.
It's been a fun thread, and the first one that I have read on your blog. I will be back (are pony tails still allowed?:)
blessings on the journey,
Jen
P.S. I just lead worship at a ladies retreat that Luanne spoke at. I was at She Speaks a few years ago but had forgotten about these blogs. So glad I visited.
