What to Wear: While You're Losing Weight!

Happy What to Wear Wednesday!
I hope your Easter was wonderful...ous certainly was. I have to give a shout out to everyone at my church who put on the most incredible message as it was probably the most amazing Easter service I have ever been to in my entire life. Honestly, it was probably the best SERVICE in general that I've ever been to. It was 2 1/2 hours long and it felt like 30 minutes! We had over 10,000 people in attendance and seriously you guys, it was amazing. If you ever want to check out our services on line just to get a feel for it, I would certainly encourage you to do so.
*
I haven't gotten to answer all the questions from last week and there were some really good ones. Katie took the time to write out some good stuff so during this week, I'll go back and answer the questions so you might want to go back and look for those.
*
But for this Wednesday post, my dear friend Karen Ehman wrote the devo for Proverbs 31 and if you haven't read it yet click on the link above. She writes about her struggle with weightloss and how she decided to enlist 2 of her friends for support. Well, those 2 friends are me and Lysa and I love that Karen feels comfortable to report to me on her weight loss journey. In the devo she talks of the day I took her chin in my hands and told her she is beautiful, just as she is. I remember that day. I didn't know how she was feeling but I could see it in her eyes that she was sad. I didn't know it was about the extra weight she had put on but sometimes I think we just need to remind our girl pals that they ARE beautiful, no matter what. And sometimes that's all they (or we) need to make a day.
*
So for today, I want to remind you that YOU are beautiful. Regardless of your extra fluffy body, or your too short, or too tall self. Or your big or little nose. Or those prints on your thighs that you call cellulite. (Those are God's fingerprints!)
I challenge you today to remind yourself that God made you precisely the way He wanted you. Seriously, if we all looked like the 6 foot models who are size minus zero that we see in the fashion magazines, it would be sooooo boring. As I write this, a show came on telling of a movie star who just had a boob job and quipped "it's so hard to hug someone now!" Come on people....can't we just be happy with what God gave us? Someone with natually large boobs is supposed to have those and I'll bet she doesn't find it hard to hug. Okay, I'm rambling. But I want to remind you, the no matter what, look in the mirror today and say, "Thank you God for making me so cute!" And then remind each of your children that they are cute or handsome too.
*
We all need to hear affirming words. It's important to our self-image and to your children's self-image. But never ever forget that even if you never hear it from someone else, God thinks you're amazing. Really, He does.

*
Now, for some slimming tips today and for some ideas on what to wear while you're losing weight!
*

  • Wear your best colors near your face to make you SHINE!

  • Push your sleeves up to 3/4 length. You will look 10 lbs slimmer!

  • Don't wear jeans that you can hardly button. Seriously, I've tried it and it just isn't comfortable. In fact all my fluffiness just hangs over the top of my waistband and girl, it ain't pretty.

  • Go up a size in your clothes so they don't cling. Cut the tag out so your forget what size it is. I'm not kidding here.

  • But a shaper to hold in your extra stuff. You can find great ones at Target by Sara Blakely, maker of Spanx but her line in Target is called Assets.

  • Go ahead and get a pair of leggings.Yes, I said it. And then get a flowy long top or dress to wear over it. Comfy girl, comfy.

  • Wear a higher heel, like a wedge, it will give you a lift!

  • Wear the right size bra for you.

  • Go ahead a buy a few new things while you're losing weight...don't wait till you've lost it all. Give yourself a reward for doing well!

  • Don't walk around with sweats on to cover yourself up. You just look sloppy.

  • Finally, Smile alot! It draws others to you.
*
Karen is giving away a basket of goodies today if you pop over to her blog and comment. You can double your chances by commenting on my blog too! So here's what you need to leave a comment about today:
What tip above is your favorite and if you have another tip for us, we'd love to hear it!
*
By the way, the makeup conference call for our winners from the makeup blog will take place next Tuesday night. I'll be emailing you the conference call in number!
And for the 2 winners of the color swatches from last week's blog, the winners are:
Michele and Danette! Email me your pics and I'll analyze you girlfriends!!!!

Love you all,
Shari

I love the tip to wear bright colors close to your face. I have a couple friends that wear mostly black because they think they blend in and don't stand out. They also think head to toe black is slimming. I'm plus size and always wear color. It just brightens my mood and my face!

This is awesome! I've just got to take it in a little more! I am struggling to lose 15 pounds! Truthfully, I need to try harder, but you have inspired me, my friend!

Many blessings to you,

Andrea

Thank you, those are some great tips!!

I always tend to try to wear a lot of black, as well, because it is thinning (especially on the bottom half!).

Thank you all for your wonderful encouragement; there are so many of us out there who need it!

Great tips! Thanks!! I am SO guilty of wearing the frumpy clothes...gotta get over it!

I like the tip about buying something new while you are losing weight. I'm sick of all my clothes and want something new, but since I'm losing weight I didn't want to buy anything. Thanks for giving me permission!!

I think the tip about wearing the right bra makes a major difference. Your middle looks thinner when "the girls" are sitting up where they need to be.

Here's a tip from me. After my son was born, I lost some of the initial baby weight but I had a lot more to lose. I went to the thrift store and spent about $50 for a "temporary" wardrobe. I found lots of cute (name brand!) clothes for those in between times. Eventually those clothes became too big, but I was so delighted with what I had found that I went back for more. Now I am down to the size I want to be in, but I am still devoted to thrift store shopping. I shop with my Deep colors swatches in hand!

Let's see, I like so many of the tips! Wearing a bright color near your face is great and buying something whle your losing! I keep refusing to buy anything because I am so unhappy aboout how I look. But honestly, my FAVORITE is probably the leggings and flowy top. I see others wear that and they look so cute but I always think I am too fat or too old...I guess not! Thanks for all the advice!

I love the tip about not wearing sweats. I am guilty of this. They are just more comfortable. But they also leave more room for me to eat too much and not feel it in my waist. Thanks for the awesome post!

Bright colors near your face and making your sleeves 3/4 length. Great tips.

I think the jeans comment is the best. You want them to fit, but not be tight. And I think a bit of heel helps, too!

I love the tip about not wearing sweats and buying a few new items as your loosing weight. As I was loosing I wore sweats a lot. I usually looked frumpy and no one could tell the progress I was making. I put off buying clothes that fit until I made it to my goal. I wish now I had purchased a few items along the way. I would have felt better about my progress. Now, I need to go throw out the "frumpy" clothes and buy clothes that fit ;)

I never knew!

God's fingerprints are all over my thighs, butt, and even some spots in my calves. Wow! He really does love me A lot! ;-) AND he's been hanging around for about 20 years now ~ to think I just recently noticed and said, "Well, Hello God! What are you doing in my life today?" Maybe now that I am finally acknowledging him and his presence in my life and {my legs}he will see his fingerprints can vanish/diminish and he can touch some one else. Because I know he will still be with me ....I just don't need to see his fingerprints in my mirror reflection every morning.

Thanks!

*smile* God's watching*

Shari, I came here from Karen's blog. I too am trying to lose some weight - because I have had cancer and it is supposed to love sugar and fat. So, I need to drop some weight. It is dfficult to lose weight even when you know how critical it is. Thanks for your comments. I need to "rethink" my dressing style. :D

I love the legging comment, I have seen a couple that I would love to buy... but didn't think a mom of 2 should be wearing them... so today at lunch I'm going shopping and smiling all the way :-)

My favorite tip is to go get a pair of leggings! I am 50, NOT in the process of loosing weight, but would love a pair of leggings. Always though 50 might be too old for them. Maybe I'll give them a try. I did loose 25 pounds a few years ago and my tip is to: WEAR CLOTHES THAT FIT!!! Not only will others notice that you have lost some weight but you will too...and that is a great feeling!

I love the "wear the right size bra for you" tip. It's so true! I'm one of the sisters with big boobs and I must confess I've never found it hard to hug people! One of the things that I've learned to do as I'm losing weight is to treat myself to a nice hair style. This really helps me look and feel good even when my clothes aren't super glam. If I don't have the money to get my hair done, I get my eye brows arched and boy does it make a difference in the way my face looks--and it's really cheap!

Fave tip: Don't wear "too tight" jeans. Good grief. When you're losing weight, wear something that showcases it, not that points out you have further to go!

On days when jeans are just too snug, I reach for a trusty pair of relaxed waist chinos that are flat front (still slimming) and yet oh so comfy. And, just like jeans, they go with anything.

Shari, Karen and Lysa... I'm IN. Thanks so much!

I just joined Karen Ehman's Wednesday group and am looking forward to the encouragement to stay on the right track.
Plus, wearing your make-up to highlight your eyes is a very good tip.

You are so right.. I never thought of buying new clothes when I am overwight I always looked to that as a reward when I lose weight but it never came. I agree even though it is hard to do.. to not wear hip huggers that are tight because you just get that muffin top affect and no baggy shirt can cover up that area. Thank you for the tips they were great. I look forward to reading more great insights to help me feel beautiful when on the outside I am in need of rejuvenation. God Bless you all...

Love your blog. After reading through some of the comments, I'd like to just add a thought. Remember that it is just as easy to throw on a cute matching athleisure suit as it is a frumpy old sweat suit :0) I love the tip to always wear a smile. It will not only help you but others around you.

Good tips, Shari! I also like to buy the right size that fits my hips for pants or a skirt, then usually I need to have the waist taken in by a tailor...I used to think I couldn't find things to fit because the hips would fit and the waist too big, or if the waist fit, the hips were too small, but I learned about how alterations make a huge difference in having your clothes off the rack fit properly!
I haven't tried leggings...wore them in the 80's in my 20's so didn't know if it was appropriate to wear them again in my 50's? But maybe, with a long top, as you say? :-)

I turn 50 later this month, and realize that my life is most likely half lived. My family tends to live to ripe old ages: my grandmother just passed away a few weeks ago at the age of 92, and my grandfather is still causing trouble at 94. But I struggle daily-struggle with 100 pounds of excess weight; struggle with foods that are not my friend; struggle with needing to exercise, but with arthritis that makes it difficult to walk, let alone dance, which is what I long to do with every muscle, ligament and breath. And I struggle to let go of control, and rest quietly in the arms of my Savior; struggle with making HIM my daily focus and priority; struggle with finding peace in His Word. My prayer this moment isn’t for healing, isn’t for strength to eat the right things, isn’t to be able to dance and play and create without pain. My prayer this moment is to have my focus on HIM, to reach for HIM instead of food or sodas, to reach for HIM when I feel pain in this body, to reach for HIM every morning when I awake, asking HIM to lead my way.

Amen

Love the tip about wearing the right size bra! I am so guilty of wearing sports bras every day cuz they are comfy. One of "braid-cord" friends always challenges me to do differently so that I don't have "unaboob" ... but, I resort back. Need to stop that!
A tip I have found is not too wear skirts/dresses that are too long. Right around the knee works great. I am relatively short at 5'3" and the extra length of ankle length skirts/dresses just makes me look frumpy.

Wearing the right size bra is something I really need to do. I know I need a professional fitting and I know that it makes a world of difference in our posture and appearance. Thanks for the reminder!

My favorite that I live by is getting my jeans the right size! I can't stand uncomfortable with too tight jeans.. definately makes me have a bad day.

My favorite that I would love to try is the leggins. I've always wanted to wear them but I've never been brave enough. I'm a jeans kinda girl and can't even remember the last time I wore a dress or skirt! Not sure I wanna show off that much leg.

Thatnk you so much for the reminder that I am beautiful to my Father. I am where I need to be right now--He is ready to help me become who I need to be later.

I am a very overwhelmed new mom of a toddler at 41 years old--sometimes I have trouble getting myself showered and my dishes done!

I am way too FLUFFY, as your blog's term for it (cute, by the way). I also have experienced trying the jeans you can barely button--NOT GOOD.

Please, oh please dear sisters in Christ, pray for me. We have no money for new clothes right now, so I will have to wear the few items that fit right now, and lose some weight to get back into the other ones.

I am in a battle that I cannot win on my own. God has been telling me I need to trust Him more. I need to let him work through me in this, as well--I have a LOT of weight to lose, and have NEVER been able to do it.

Thanks for the prayers and encouragement--I'm gonna need every one!

As a gal trying to lose weight myself... my best advice would be, don't continue wearing your 'fat clothes'... they are comfy and could give you the feeling you 'have room to grow'.

Since I have been a multitude of sizes, I'm getting to wear my old clothes that fit once again, but if I didn't, I would browse some thrifty options, either at sales at Target or Wal-Mart, many of their past season's clothes can be changed into the current season with the right accessories. Or I would hit up a couple of outlet or thrift stores.

Feel comfortable in your size, no matter how long you are going to be there!

Thanks, Shari, for giving me permission to buy leggings! Seriously! I have put on a few pounds that I am working to take off, and then some, I hope, and I am just plain uncomfortable right now in my clothes! I think a shopping trip is in my immediate future so I can feel better!

Also, I have heard you talk about the right bra size many times, and I can attest to this fact. I went to get fitted, at your behest I might add :), and was amazed at two things: 1) I couldn't believe how off I was on my bra size, both band width, and cup size. The bra lady actually shuddered! I kid you not! 2) When I put my sweater back on wearing the right bra size for me, I looked 10 lbs. thinner! By far, the easiest 10 lbs. I ever lost! Thanks, Shari!

Love you,
Dawn

I really liked the idea of treating yourself while you are losing weight and not waiting. This is such incentive.

Personally speaking, I like to get a new haircut, or try out a new lipstick every now and again as a way to treat myself as well.

P.S. If my thighs are God's fingerprints, then He has some REALLY BIG HANDS! I laughed out loud at that thought!

The 'long flowy tops' -TUNICS- are awesome and so IN for spring/summer. Make sure you wear the correct proportion with them--meaning bottoms with the tunics. You will want to get those leggings or 'jeggings' to wear with the tunics. So, go try some on. You most likely will find one you really love.

My favorite tip is "Smile alot!" When you smile, you make yourself feel better, but you also make those around you feel better!

My tip would be, learn to rely on God as your comfort, as your exercise partner, as your strength to go that last mile or those last 30 minutes of exercise. He walks this walk with us every single step. We just need to learn to turn to him and say, "Hey, thanks for walking with me. For helping me to overcome this hurdle. For the blessing of the abilities you gave me. For EVERYTHING. Sometimes we forget that He's there!

I love the tip to not wear sloppy sweats. I did that a lot before I lost over 100 pounds. I thought I was covering up my fluff and hiding, but I really just looked sloppy and as if I didn't care about myself, which I didn't.

My tip is to wear underwear which make you feel good. I discovered that by wearing what I think are sexy bras and panties makes me smile throughout the day. I am the only one who knows what is going on under my clothes, but it gives me such satisfaction and pleasure. I let my husband in on what I was doing and it pleased him that I was finally doing something just for myself, without the need for someone else's approval. What an ah-ha moment for me!

My favorite tip is most definitely buying the size jeans that fit and then cutting out the tag! Clothes that fit right flatter. I'm totally against the muffin-top thing going on these days! I do hate looking at that next larger size, though, so cutting out the tag will help me tremendously!!! Thanks for the tips! :)

Shari, wow, love your post. I like the idea of the 3/4" sleeves making you look slimmer! But, love all the other tips as well. Thanks for so much to ponder and think about.

I really enjoyed the wearing bright colors around your face! Everyone these days seem to be wearing so much black and deep purple (Yes I know it's the fashion color of the year, but can't you go with a lighter purple?) I loved how at church on Easter Sunday EVERYONE was wearing bright colors! I was like "Woah. I know who went shopping this week!" Haha!! =]

Wearing the right size bra for you! Sounds silly, but I just didn't want to admit to myself that I was the size the tag said I was! Once I found a bra that fit well, I was surprised at how much better I felt about myself! Better posture, no "extra fluff" around my back and sides where the old bra was digging in.
I adore this blog and I found it through Karen's @ Proverbs 31. Thanks for making me feel prettier!
My tip to add... lip gloss! Get a pretty, shiny, sparkly lip gloss on your lips and work that smile!

Smile ladies, smile!!! Knowing that we are right where God wants us, is enough for me. Sure I need to lose this extra weight, but I plan on smiling along my journey!! Thank you Shari for your inspiration!

I like color and 3/4 length sleeves; they are not very practical in the south during summer but i love them in winter.

Loved all the tips. Thanks, Shari! The one that "got" me was the reminder not to dress sloppy. Some days it is just plain HARD!

Thank you!!

The 3/4 sleeve tip is great. I actually buy a lot of 3/4 sleeve tops and didn't even know that we good for me! Thanks!

I love the push your sleeves up to 3/4 length. You will look 10 lbs slimmer! I did not know that

On the subject of getting the right sized bra - I recently went and got sized. I am SO much more comfortable now that I'm not trying to squeeze myself into something smaller. It was shocking to learn my true size, and it was shocking to shell out $80 for a bra, but let me tell you - it was so worth it. Also, once you find the right size and style for you, you can find your bras on eBay much cheaper than at the store!

I liked the smile suggestion - it does draw others to you.

My favorite part of your post was that you reminded us that God thinks we are beautiful and that we need to remind each other that we are beautiful.
I don't know what it is but I can remind myself of this all day long and it just doesn't seem to sink in but when someone else says it - even in a blog post - it just brings tears to my eyes and belief to my heart.
Thank you God that you love me just as I am.
Thank you Shari for reminding me.

I love the tip about going the size up on jeans or anything if you need to. Sometimes the "bigger" size is the one that will actually make you look more slender. I love and I loved both your and Karen's post today. I just started reading proverbs 31 devotionals and am finding it to be a blessing in my life as I am rebuilding my relationship with the Lord.

I love the smile tip- I know it is easier to do for most people, but have recently been faced with severe depression and didn't realize how many people relied on that hope for their own lives through me...I have long been recognized for my laugh and appreciated for my smile, given the name sunshine wherever I work, Christian ministry or not. It is a helpful reminder!!! I had my wisdom teeth out 5 days ago and can't help but smile!!! (Even if it hurts) I look forward to looking through your posts to see what I can do with my ever changing figure and currently in the middle of sizes. I am loving the jeans that haven't fit in almost 9 years!! I a excited that I am almost a "misses" instead of "women's"...still in the middle and I will hang in there and search your blog for more great hints! :)

I needed to hear your tip about not hanging out in sweats. I just bought a new pair of sweat pants today because I am feeling so uncomfortable in my body. So I think I will go with a size larger jeans and commit to giving this challenge to God each and every day. Thanks for the tips!

I like the tip about smiling more!

I just started (again) this week I'm resolving to make healthy choices, not try and 'be skinny'.
Thank you for the inspiration!

My two favorite tips are don't wear the jeans too tight (muffin top) and don't wear the baggy sweats. I wanted to do that but really it just makes you look bigger. I find a little more fitted with a little bump or bulge showing still looks a lot thinner than the baggy frumpy does.
Thanks,

What great tips! I completely agree with not wearing jeans you can't button, why torture ourselves? I also like wearing your best colors near your face. Whatever it takes to feel good and accept our loveliness in Christ!

Never knew pulling your sleeves up made you look slimmer or that Target had their own brand of Spanx! You always have the best tips. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.

I'd have to go with the don't walk around in sweats tip. I've went that path, I usually end up feeling fatter than if I'd just stayed in my pj's!!!
Thanks!!

Thanks for the tips and encouragement. It helps to buy something new as we lose even a little. To feel that you look good and the work is paying off.

I love your insight... My fave is wearing your color close to the face. I also think it is important to "dress your age".

I love your blog!! I really like the tip about going up a size in clothing while losing weight. I am doing that and it just makes me feel more comfy and not as embarrassed about my clothes being so tight too. I really have to take some weight off for my own health and emotional well-being. I am so thankful for you ladies at Proverbs 31 Ministries!!! God bless you!!!

Really?!?! Leggings and long flowy tops?!?! I always loved this look but thought it was for skinny girls. Looks like I am making a trip to Target for my shaper, leggings and long flowy top. I can't wait! Thanks so much for your advice Shari. You and Karen have both helped me alot. God bless.

My favorite tip.....WEAR JEAN THAT FIT.

Just this morning I actually turned the car around and went back home to change. The jeans I put on were too tight and I was feeling so uncomfortable just driving to work. I am thanking God for that little ah ha moment this morning when I turned around. I am breathing much easier now.

I love the tip about permission to buy new clothes while losing weight. Last year I lost over 20 pounds but didn't give myself permission to buy new clothes cause I was trying to reach that optimal goal and then reward myself with new clothes. Fast forward to today, I have put it all back on plus an extra 5 ( and not because I didn't buy those clothes mind you) and boy is my self image lower than it has been in a very long time. Turning 50 this year didnt help either. The best tip you gave today for me was the positive self talk to God, to remind myself, that no matter what, to look in the mirror today and say, "Thank you God for making me so cute!" You know if I said that to myself on the heels of every negative self image thought, I would have a much healthier self image and better yet a much more intimate communication with my Creator. And so I will aim for Progress not perfection. Thanks Shari!!

My favorite is to get yourself something new while you are losing. I am guilty of saying I will buy something when I lose some more weight. Unfortunetly that is a slowwwwwww process :) It is a good way to reward yourself.

My favorite is wearing the right size bra. I didn't do this for years just because I was afraid to go and get sized. It does make a difference!

Seems so simple, but I love the tip to go ahead and buy a few things as you loose weight! I've been telling myself it's pointless, but walking in my closet is a nightmare... NOTHING fits! I'm going to take that tip to heart and get a few things this weekend!

Hey Shari~
I have 2 favorite tips-wear your best colors close to your face and to buy a few new things on your weight loss journey. Thanks for the pics you post too. I am a visual learner and that really is helpful.

favorite tip- buy some leggings!! I'm 41 and keep looking at them and really want some. Now I have the go ahead!! LOL

I actually like two tips. I like the use of color rather than black. I use to wear black A LOT because I thought it made me look thinner. Now I wear the color because I FEEL BETTER IN IT. I'm trying to lose weight for the health, not the look.

The second tip I like was to SMILE. It's easier to stay motivated in addition to drawing others to you.

I totally feel thinner when I wear heels. At 5'3" I need all the help I can get!
